Most definitely not. Any type of violent confrontation with kids in the immediate vicinity has to avoided if at all possible.

I also don't think it's worth the moral, legal or spiritual cost to kill someone over a material object. However, my attitude changes if it involves intrusion into my home. We're kid-free now and my wife and I discussed and decided that such a situation would be met with the maximum amount of violence we can muster.

In such a situation, there's no time or room for error to decide whether the intruder just wants to steal our stuff or cause us harm.

Simply put, if someone breaks into your home they are not doing so because they want to give you a hug, they are there to do one of two things - either cause harm to you and your family, or steal/destroy your property. CT is very much a liberal state that tries to protects criminals from innocent people as much as possible (yes I worded that correctly), but after the Cheshire home invasion in July 2007 views about CT castle doctrine changed and the .gov now says "shoot to kill, no warning necessary" if someone breaks into your house - previously it was "run and hide/barricade in a room, call police, give perps anything they want" While I certainly would try and hide the kids in another room if I had them, I won't willingly become a victim. The castle doctrine may seem a bit crazy, but it seems to work in Texas!

Same with here in Colorado. We have the "Make My Day Law." which basically says that if someone breaks into your house, you can shoot them dead without any laws being broken. As a Corrections Officer, I see this as a great law. For all I know, one of my inmates when released, could find out where I live and want to pay me a visit or even a family member or friend of theirs. If I ever need to protect my family, it is nice knowing that the law backs me up!
