Clear guards were pretty common on some finishes in the '80s. I've seen many on Bluebursts, Trans Reds, or Sunbursts, for example. I don't know, however, whether they were made by EBMM in-house or sourced externally.
Unlike more modern replacements, the original clear guards were very thin - around 1.5 mm - and tended to develop cracks around the screw holes.
