    Stratifying a Sub 1

Well, got a little bored today and put together a SS SSS pickguard for my black Sub 1. I call it "stratifying" a Subbie. Oh, it'll have the molex connector on it too; as do all my Sub 1s. The pups are Tex Mex, pots CTS and switch is CRL. Sounded good in a $trat so should sound even better in a Sub. Had to countersink the pickup mounting screw holes on the Chandler guard to use the vintage style screws.

Will take a pic when it gets on the guitar too. White on black doesn't look too shabby. I had an all black SS SSS guard before, with DiMarzio Blue Velvets in it, but for some reason I sold it to a chap in England. I'll bet he still likes it.

I joined this site JUSt to ask if anyone's ever done this before. I've been contemplating converting my SUB for months now and just haven't got around to it. Can't wait to see how it turns out!

Two of my subs are all already routed with a single coil middle cavity. There are already a couple of threads here on that subject. I did one showing the routing process I think. Don't know where it is though, you'll have search for it. I'm not going to be showing that process here. I'm just going to install it on my black Sub that currently has a silo spec SSH guard on it (pic in my album). If I do rout my blue sub then I'll show that process again. It's easier to do if you get a template from StewMac. The pic is the finished result of routing a single coil cavity in a Sub 1.

So the silo spec pickguard lines up on the sub without mods (outside of routing pickup cavities)? I found an SSS pickguard on ebay, it's for a trem model and my sub is a hardtail but it looks like it will work.

    Cool project!

I am considering putting GFS Surf 90's in my SUB-1 for a vintage Dynasonic tone.

Thanks Keith ..... Mike, sounds like a cool plan. I was entertaining the thought of doing up a MM90 Sub 1 myself. Wonder how good the GFS Surf 90's are? The price is certainly right. I'd have the guard mounted already but I've been really sick. Bad cold.

The Surf90's are the based on the old Dearmond Dynasonic which is the classic Cliff Gallup rockabilly sound.

What molex connectors are you using for pickup swapping?

i've used the Mean 90's in an OLP and i just bought the Professional Series for a tele that i'm building... they're great pickups for the price. I even considered buying some for my 20th

if you look at their "clearance" section they might have what you're wanting at a deeper discount.

Top notch guys and they're great to work with

Same as in Silo Spec - M05559 - call customer service - they're a 3 pin male/female set with only two pins inserted in each side with two lead pigtails (black and white wires), the M05558 is a 3 pin male/female set with 5 pins in it with red/white/black pigtail on one side and black/white pigtail on the other side. This one is for the silent circuit (naturally) but you have to specify to add the extra MALE pin to hook up the red wire in the other side. (the male side)
