That is a great writeup Ben. As SBMM said, these are great platforms for us to put our personal touches on. Even better that now they come with the Axis pickups.

Here's what I've done to mine. That $20 trem you bought off eBay - I bought the same one years ago and had it sitting around until I put it on my AX40 when I bought it new. I didn't swap out parts; I simply installed the Gotoh knockoff. It's been on there for about 3 years now (had a black Gotoh at one point but didn't quite like the black look) and have had zero issues with it personally. I also have replaced the bridge pickup with one from a Peavey Wolfgang. I never thought about replacing the whole switch, instead I've been looking high and low for a chrome tip. The first couple I bought off eBay were too big and wouldn't screw on, but third time's a charm and this one fits great. The volume pot is pretty much toast at this point so now would be a good time to replace it, maybe with a new EVH branded one. Also, thanks for the links for the other parts too, now I'm likely going to replace the string retainer bar as well.

One question, does that brass sustain block fit on both tremolos you have and what size is it?

I can only go by the measurements I've taken from my EBMM EVH compared to My SBMM AX40 and the Specs from Gotoh found here GE1996T. When I measured the studs on my EVH and compared them to the AX40 the spacing was identical. The tremolo cavity was close but not exact. If I remember correctly I believe my AX40 was a hair deeper than my EVH. My EVH has a 40mm block which is what the Gotoh comes with. So with all that I'm going on the assumption that the Gotoh will drop right in without modifications. Now I know the studs from Gotoh are larger than what the AX40 has so if you want to use the Gotoh studs you will have to have them put in by a professional if you don't have the equipment or knowledge to do that. Hopefully someone will attempt this soon and answer all our questions on this. I'm happy with my modifications so I'll be holding off on a Gotoh for the time being. If I change my mind I'll definitely update that here!

Very cool! The block I have on mine is a 37mm and it did fit on both tremolos. The one that came on my Gotoh knock off was too short so I got a longer one off eBay. I would like to see some closer shots of your tremolo and switch tip.

Hi Ben! Do you know if the saddles that came off of your no name gotoh knock off are hardened steel or zinc? I was thinking about buying one, but prefer the hardened steel vs zinc. Thanks!

As far as I know they are steel. If you're just looking for saddles check these out Guitar Saddles Set for Gotoh Floyd Rose 1996T Music Man Saddles | eBay

Hello, I have an AX40D that I am thinking about modding the trem. With the NEW!! Heavy Duty Dual Locking Floyd Rose Trem- BRASS&STEEL that you had a link to what other parts if any would I need to complete this mod. Thanks

Please note that before you buy this tremolo it will not fit on the Sterling without changing the sustain block . The block mine had on it was too short. It also did not pivot as smoothly on the Sterling pivot studs. This led me to rebuild the Sterling using the saddles off this tremolo. I would not have paid that much just for the saddles. As I stated earlier I found my tremolo on ebay for $20. It's up to you how much you want to spend for parts.

The Gotoh & Floyd Rose bridge have been used to replace the Sterling bridge by other AX 40 owners. You probably could use that bridge if you replace the studs. I didn't want to go to too much trouble and I'm happy with the Sterling trem with the saddle upgrade. It plays well and stays in tune so I'm happy. I hope this helps.

I upgraded my AX40 with a Bourns 500k pot, tone knob and dimarzio style ebmm evh switch.

A BIG THANKS to Brian at Sterling by Music Man for his help guiding me through the wiring to get it right. This guitar sounds great and plays unbelievable. I also have a purple AX40D that I'll probably do the mod to later. And I received my EBMM EVH Amber Quilt today as well. I am truly blessed!
