NYNGD: New Year's New Guitar Days! NYNGD #2013-2

Happy Holidays and Happy New Year, everyone!

As I explained yesterday, last year I did a fun thing that most of you I think enjoyed, and I thought I would do it again this year. Like last year, I have been remiss in keeping my Guitar Gallery up to date... So, as a fun lead-up to New Years, let's launch a guitar in the Guitar Gallery each day leading up to New Years Day!

OK, here's the second NYNGD guitar: A 1995 Silhouette!

This Sunburst Silhouette is nicknamed "Smokey" -- I purchased it used and it arrived in an Anvil flight case and the whole works smelled like an ashtray. Even after a thorough cleaning, the guitar STILL smells like an ashtray!

With its covered humbuckers, this guitar has a classy feel, although the cracked pickguard will need to be replaced along with some scratchy pots. Having said all that, the setup on this guitar is outstanding with super-low action.

This would be one of my studio workhorses if not for the fact that I can't stand that when I play it my hands smell like I've gone back to smoking. It's been about 14 months since my last cigarette and I NEVER want my hands to stink like that again! Thankfully, I never smoked in my house so this is the ONLY guitar I own that smells like crap.

I'll be back later tonight with todays second installment in a doubleheader NYNGD: New Year's New Guitar Day!

    Thanks for looking everyone!

Well, she looks like new and I love the wood grain...but, oh that smell...what about treating the fretboard with lemon oil? Let it sit for a long time before wiping it away. The new pickguard may help.

I found a thread where someone put this odor absorbing sponge in their guitar case for a week and it absorbed the smoke smell:

You'll have to ditch the case. Most likely it's totally saturated with tar and smoke, and you'll never get the smell out of the case unless you ozone the heck out of it. The guitar I would take apart completely and use some good polish or maybe even naptha on the entire thing to get as much tar as possible out.

If it's got an oiled neck, I would murphy's oil soap it several times and re-oil. You also might want to soap the fretboard as well to see how much of the gunk you can get out. De-smoking a guitar is not a battle, it's a war.

    Jeff,

I've been giving this product some thought. The post I read stated that the smelly guitar was placed in it's partially opened case, then covered with a towel for one week.

I would buy one sheet of 4'x8' plywood 3'4" thick and make a coffin for the guitar to be sealed into with that product for longer (3 weeks or a month?). You wouldn't need to frame it with 2x4's since the plywood is thick and you won't be moving it around. I'd use those black sheetrock screws (my favorite for everything). If you are interested in doing this, I've also figured out the dimensions for your cuts, which I'd be happy to give you.

Another big reason to stop smoking, the second-hand value of any music equipment goes down the drain...

I have never smoked, yet all the bars round here seem to allow smoking. As a result all my gear stinks!

Quite how anyone can smoke is beyond me!
