Putting Duncan pickups in EBMM Axis

Quite a few years ago I owned an Axis with fixed tailpiece. Didnít care for the pickups and I sold it.

Had it had a Floyd Rose I would have kept it and tried other pickups in it.

For Christmas I bought myself a 1990 Axis with Floyd Rose.

Love the guitar but once again, I donít love the pickups.

Theyíre so far from the strings and through my blackface Fenders (Deluxe Reverbs w/Celestion G12H30ís 75 Hz) Iím just not getting the sounds I prefer.

I have twO PRS Custom 22ís and I replaced the Dragons and Dragon II pickups with Duncan Antiquitys in one and with uncovered Seth Lovers in the other. In my PRS SE Singlecuts I went with Pearly Gates.

In my ES-335 I have Tom Holmes ďPAFsĒ.

So I like vintage style PAF tone, and I like the treble kiss I get when the pickups are closer to the strings than the Dimarzios are set in my Axis.

I was thinking of putting a set of Antiquitys in the Axis and setting them the same distance from the strings as they are in my PRS CU22.

Iíd shim them if need be as I donít want to use pickup mounting rings.

Will there be any problems with the legs being shorter or longer or ??? With the Duncanís?

I know Iíll have to reshape the feet to more of a V shape. That doesnít scare me.

    Many thanks!

Not going to try to dissuade you from changing the pickups, but have you tried moving them closer to the strings? You may need to get longer screws and use some foam behind them to get them closer.

    OK...I’ll try that first.

I want to see how long the legs on the Dimarzios are anyway, and see if the Duncans are shorter or longer.

Mine has only a volume control.

I need a tone control too, especially for the bridge pickup.

I use it when I’m soloing to get a more vowel like violin tone.

There’s room to add one, but first I’m going to try a concentric volume and tone pot like you see on the earliest Fender Jazz basses.

That way I won’t h@ve to drill an extra hole for the tone control.

Ordered it a couple of days ago.

1990? Is that a misprint? 1990 was the first year of the Van Halen model guitar, the Axis name wasn't used until after EVH split from Music Man in 1995.

    . Thanks!

1990 is what the guy on Reverb who sold it to me said it was. Serial number is 606707.

Call Customer Service or post the serial number in the linked thread below and they can tell you when the guitar was made...

Serial Numbers : What is the production date of my guitar?

Wait a minute - don't EBMM serial numbers have only 5 digits (or 5 preceeded by a letter)?

I don't like the way this is going. Hope the guitar is an actual EBMM for Lewguitars sake.

Agreed. It may be an honest error on the seller's part but I would put a hold on the payment until this is sorted out.

Sorry. I misread the serial number. It is: G06707. Not 606707.

    It’s a real Axis. And a beauty.

Looking at the serial number data base, I now think mine is from 1999...not 1990 like the seller thought.

I got it for under a grand with the original case, so I’m happy.

    Thanks!

Nice! However, we have a saying around here - no pics, no guitar!!! Let's see some!

Even we mancave noodlers can appreciate the perfection that is an EBMM guitar.

The guitar is in my avatar.

These are photos taken by the guy who sold it to me and they really don’t do it justice. The red is much redder and prettier.

Nice score! Call Customer service to find out the DOB (date of birth) so you know.
personally, I really like the idea of a concentric pot... I'm all for making guitars 'your own', but you might regret drilling new holes in that beauty later...
