Cool NYNGD: New Year's New Guitar Days! NYNGD #2018-18

Welcome to Day 18 of my annual New Year's New Guitar Days (NYNGD)!

Thanks for the kind words and comments on NYNGD #2018-17!

OK, guys, after a little break, I am back with another NYNGD! I also decided to start doing larger photos -- the old format is really from like 6 years ago. These larger ones give you a better look. Maybe I'll go back and make the other guitars larger; maybe not -- we'll see.

AND ONLY THREE REMAIN! Getting closer! Now here's a fact: any one of these last three guitars could equally win the coveted slot as the Grand FinaleTM! They are all stunning and awesome and, honestly, I struggled and debated what order to show these last three. Then I said "F-it" and here we are!

Today's NYNGD is a very special, one-off Axis. She has a natural pomelle bubinga top, a mahogany back stained red, a roasted maple neck and fretboard, black binding, and chrome hardware. Bubinga top! Have you ever seen one of those from EBMM? No sir, you have not! The bubinga has a very slight reddish hint in the brown, the red back is outta this world, and the black binding is such a nice alternative to the standard cream binding. As good as this guitar looks in the photos, it is 10x better in person. I just couldn't capture the richness of the top. Just awesome.

I have her tuned a 1/2 step flat to Eb. Just... because. The Super Slinkys are really slinky on this gal, and she feels SOOOO good. The sound is unlike any other Axis -- the real standout feature is the neck pickup: this thing sounds like Hendrix wailing a solo on the neck pickup of his Strat. Never heard a humbucker sound like this. So amazing. In bridge pickup mode, it's an Axis, alright, but tight and punchy (even with .009's tuned a half step flat, which usually is a bit more brown).

This is the kind of guitar you play unplugged for hours and your wife/girlfriend finds you asleep on the couch at 3am. How do I know? Happened last night. Question is: was it my wife or my girlfriend who found me (on Valentine's Day, no less).

You all agree this is a Top 3 guitar and could even be #1, right? We'll have to see what the next two bring to the table!

I'll be back in the next few days with another NYNGD: New Year's New Guitar Day! Thanks for looking everyone!

(The back story in case you're new to my NYNGD: For the past couple of years I've done a fun thing that most of you I think enjoyed, and I thought I would do it again this year. Every year, I am a slacker about keeping my Guitar Gallery up to date... So, as a fun holiday thing, let's launch a guitar in the Guitar Gallery each day leading up to New Years Eve! In the past I've received PM's about my collection and whether I play all of these guitars. The same question came up during my NYNGD posts a few years ago and my answer was pretty detailed and well thought-out, so please check it out here!)

(Also, in case anybody gets any funny ideas -- these guitars are not at my house. They are all in my very secure and alarmed studio facility. I usually only have two guitars floating around the house...)

Man, you're right. IMHO, the Floyd is only unfashionable to people who give a sh!t about what's fashionable. I still really like a Floyd Rose, floating or down-only.

It always shocks me how some players are literally afraid of a Floyd Rose. Like it's some mystical being or a super complex gear that requires a math degree. The only thing that's a pain on a Floyd (as compared to a vintage-style trem) is setting intonation. But the frequency that I need to set intonation on one of my Floyd guitars is a minuscule fraction of the time I spend putting nut sauce in vintage nuts. LOL.

I'll admit, I have also become very fond of the non-Floyd floating Majesty bridge, and also the pulled-up floating vintage trem on the LIII (although the heads of the saddle height screws often annoy me because they're rough on the hand).

But the fact is if you want to rock and never have tuning issues no matter how hard you play it and how much trem use you do, you can't beat a Floyd.
