Dead strings

So this is my first bass of my own
and never really had the opportunity to play out bass strings til now

Now im assuming, Im asking....

is it safe to presume when, lets say the E string makes like a dull thudd instead of a nice ring when the bass is unplugged
is a good sign to change the strings

If they thudd .. it's about that time. I'm sure it will sound 100% better with new strings.
I'm always amazed when I change mine .. I sit there and think "Why don't I do this more often??"

I just shave less often but that doesn't really apply to strings, does it?

You can prolong the life of the strings a little more by wiping them down after playing. Try using our Wonder Wipe String Cleaner. It has a polymer in it that protects the core of the strings from any yuckiness that might come off of your fingers (or toes). Maintenence does help when trying to save money. Not sure that the wipes would work on your razors though

You can always use them for "fishing" cable when your done!!

Especially if you need 300 lb. test for those "big" ones!!

There's no doubt any number of funky stories about players who yucked up their fingers before playing a gig ... like uh the Jaco / KFC tale, fair enough to say that if I played like him I might yuck up my fingers aforeplaying as well, but at my humble level, I've found that washing my hands before playing keeps my action right and also helps my Slinkys last pretty well, but on the other hand, there's nothing for good tone quite like a fresh set of strings and I've never found that strings cost less to replace after they've started to "thud", so I go for the fresh tone and keep my paws squeaky clean, especially if I've been eating or drinking before playing
fresh strings and batteries are a must before playing... furthermore, changing strings is also, to me, something of a religious experience and my SR5s seem to appreciate the cuddling and attention they get including the polishing that follows to remove any smudges on the glossy MusicMan finish ... my "girls" always get wrapped in a soft, clean blanket before maintenance procedures and I usually get naked to avoid any scuffs or scratches from clothing items ... along with Wonderwipes which I've heard great things about, I'm still waiting for BP and the MusicMan marketing team to launch a new line of practice and playwear to enhance our total MusicManiac experience ... how 'bout genuine EBMM "Jammies?? with pictures of MusicMan guitars and basses ... they'd make great gift items for special people in our lives and could be sold per piece at a similar price as a set of Slinky bass strings, Now, wouldn't everybody feel better practicing, playing or hitting the sheets wearing some fresh, soft, warm "MMJammies" and wouldn't they all sleep better knowing their MusicMan bass would sound better in the morning with a fresh set of Slinkys??

Haha, on a related note. I always change strings and clean my guitars immediately after I take a shower in my bathrobe.
