/rant on - Sooooo i play a Fender Strat. i must say i hate it. i use to love Fender guitars but when i break a string all the rest(due to the spring-loaded bridge crap) all fall outta tune. when in the middle of a song, if you break a string it is impossible to continue. I Will NEVER buy another guitar with a stupid whammy-bar (that i never use) or even stupider 'floating lock system bridge'... who ever at fender created such wretched pieces of crap needs drugg out into the cold black streets and lit on fire. /end rant

With that said , here is my problem. for some reason i go thru D strings like nobodys buisiness. it almost makes me sick to my stomick when i break one... 3 a week and thats a good week. The music stores around my parts charge twice as much as the string goes for in a set if it is sold by itself.(gotta love greedy ass music stores)... Since i refuse to bend over to their 'replacement string price-jacking', i am forced to buy packs of strings for the one D string i need. so i have a box with 40+ of every string except the D string. I came to this site in hope that Ernie ball the trusted string company, that ive been buying strings from for many MANY years, would have an easy order "single string" click thru kind of web page. but sadly i click the link thru the products - then i click Strings - then i click my 'type' of string (Stainless steel) - and i end up at a nice looking page of the strings and info on them. BUT NO WAY TO ORDER THEM!!!! wtf?

where am i going wrong? can anyone tell me if it is possible to get like a bulk order of like 50 D strings from Ernieball.com? or am i wasting my time here?

Maybe someone from Ernieball could Email me or reply to this and post a link to an order form. maybe set me up with some way to get a ton of these evil D strings... I would forever buy string from and thru Ernieball if this could happen.

Oddly i would think that EB would be able to sell me a bulk order of the string i need but they were not able to sell to the public.

went to the one of the meny guitar stores and packs sell for $5. Had to buy a pack of strings at that price (accually 3 packs, yet again) for one string. again i priced the stores replacement strings and they said one replacement wound D string is $1.79

Insane.

Customer service mentioned i should try Musicansfriend. so i checked thier site and they sell EB 'Power Slinky' strings (the kind i use) for $3.49 a pack, which is alot cheaper per pack than stores let them go for. but MF does not carry single replacement Nickel wound D strings at all. so im outta luck for today.

I am now crazy.

Broke the D, have you considered having the guitar checked over for the cause of the problem? If you're breaking the same string over and over again and the string is snapping at the bridge saddle, you may have a sharp edge or burr that keeps cutting into the string.

If you don't feel confident in sorting out the problem yourself, take the guitar to a reputable repairman in your local area and get him to check it out for you. It shouldn't cost you too much to get this rectified and would save you a lot of time and money.

Othewise, sell the guitar and buy a SUB1!

Definately. Breaking D strings over and over again isn't normal. While you're at it, have someone set the guitar up with the trem blocked for you so you don't have to worry about going out of tune with a string break. The problems you are having should all be fixable.

I have the EXACT same problem with my guitar.
I play a strat style guitar (a Squire, piece of ****e), I was always braking d strings, and I would often take my guitar to music shops and they would just sort of sand the saddle down to stop the metal from cutting into the D string.
Anyway I took it to anouther shop and I ended up getting the saddles replaced with graphite ones. Everything was great, feels heaps better.

Well I just broke anouther d string just now in exactly the same way, so now I am starting to think its the way I play.

graphite saddles work wonders... but so do SUB 1's!

I broke A and D strings on my Axis SS left and right until I got graphite saddles and I reduced string breakage about 75%. My SUB1, however, rarely breaks strings and I have the stock saddles still on it.

+1 I had a fender p-bass that had the same problem, i was always breaking my A. and for bass, a broken string itself is pretty damn rare. Needless to say I got rid of it and bought a stingray
