Question EB String Question for Big Poppa

Did D'Addario once make the EB strings? If so, were they the same design as the D'Addario strings?

I belong to another forum and we're making string comparisons. One fellow believes EB strings and D'Addario strings are the same materials and design. I don't believe that, as I can hear a definite difference in the strings.

I like both brands. My Stingray 5 will never wear anything but EB Slinkys.

    Thanks,

    Craig

I'm not BP, but since I just happened to try these strings back to back a couple of days ago, I can tell you this: although they might share basic specs in design and material (nickel on hex core, round wound, even 45-65-80-100 on both sets), they are very different indeed!

Ernie Ball is one of the few manufacturers with it's own factory and research, and so are D'Addario. But they are two separate companies, building to different production specs, and it does show. The Super Slinkys and the EXL 170 definitely feel different and they do sound different - I was really surprised how much different they are.

I understand BP & crew asks us to refrain from flogging their valued competitors, so I'll just say that I will stick with Ernie Ball strings ... basically I bought the other ones to make a point to myself (and be be able to say that I tried 'em).

    Cheers
Yes, but why is the rum gone?!

You mean there are "other" guitar strings out there??!!

Actually, not sure on the outcome of the question - or for that matter, whether or not an answer is forthcoming.

I would probably venture to say that this is something that is really not considered public information. However, the outcome of the above taste comparisons kinda speaks for itself anyway.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I don't see why it would matter, if the strings are now made by Ernie Ball, though.

I'm just trying to prove my point. Someone thinks the strings are identical. I don't think the strings are alike, at all. I mean, other than being nickel rounds on a hex core.

Ours are manufactured by tiny elves while they use umpa lumpas........Honestly though, we have no comment on the competition. But, I will say that despite materials used and machines, other variables that make a big difference are the people operating them. The care and attention to detail our mechanics put in to make sure the machines are running properly, to those working the machine and making sure they are producing accurately, to the quality control tester that assures the production run is up to spec, are all vital parts in creating the quality strings that we put out in the market.

The quality of Ernie Ball or D'Addario strings was never in question. I use both.

Even if some person with an unsubstantiated belief that EB and the other company's strings are made of the same materials and design, how does that even lead to the first question of whether that company once made the EB strings?
20th Anniversary Silhouette, trem, natty headstock, flame top, maple board (01/25/07)
JP6 Blue Dawn LE, piezo and matching headstock, no inlays (07/10/07)
    JP6 BFR Koa (11/11/08)

I think it is a good informative question for us EBMM fans!! We like to know our company's history, since we feel close to it.

Kinda like Japan building cars for General Motors in the 70's, and then having different nameplates etc. .. on them.

OK guys, put on your thinking hats - anyone remember a particular car/truck from that period??? We'll take the fourth caller right now

The other person seemed to believe the early EB strings were made by D'Addario. Simple enough, right? Canadians... lol!
