Amp/Effects Modelling - Basic Principles?

    Amp/Effects Modelling - Basic Principles?

    I need some help before I start recording for the first time to my PC...!

    Would appreciate if anybody or evrrybody could help explain the varoius type of effects i have on tap and the various sounds/tone I should expect from the amp/cabinet simulators....

    1/ Difference between an open back and closed cabinet
    2/ Difference beteen a single 12inch and double 12" speaker cabinet
    3/ Differnece between a 4x10 and 4x12" cabinet
    4/ Differences between all of the above in open and closed back cabs?

    Examples would be great!

    Is it ok to mix Modulations and Filter effects like Chorus, Flanger, Phaser, Pedal Vibratos, Rotary Simulators and Pitch shifters? If not, why not?

    Now for delay effects....What is the difference between a slap back delay, a stereo delay, a dual tapped ping p[ong delay, a tape echo simulated delay and a dual head tape echo simulated delay? Examples would posssibly prove useful here!

    Reverb...Difference between Wet air and Dry air, Room reverb, pplate reverb, Hall reverb and Spring reverb?

    Now this leads me onto my next question! If I wanted to attempt to re-create a similar tone to the following artists, what effects, amp/cabinet simulators could I use to come close?

    A/ Luke
    B/ Petrucci

    I am playing a JP6 with Piezo and a Quilt top amber Axis through a 5150 Head and 4 x12 Cabinet...

    If someone could unlock the basic effects Luke and John use for their studio albums etc that would be a great start!

    I'll touch on a few of these.

    1/ Difference between an open back and closed cabinet
    * Open back spreads the sound out a little more. A little less low-end 'thump'. Closed backs tend to be more directional, and have a little more thump.

    2/ Difference beteen a single 12inch and double 12" speaker cabinet
    * Moving more air with two, louder with two, likely a touch more low end.

    3/ Differnece between a 4x10 and 4x12" cabinet
    * 4x10's have less low end usually. Quite good for putting a guitar into a good spot in the mix of a band I find. 4x12's are the standard for ever. Nothing wrong with either, just depends on the sound you're going for. I think the speaker choice itself, moreso than the size is more important.

    4/ Differences between all of the above in open and closed back cabs?
    * You can probably come to you own conclusions based on the above.

    * Yes, nothing is wrong with doing any of that. If it sounds good, it is good. Experiment and come up with cool new things.

    What is the difference between a slap back delay, a stereo delay, a dual tapped ping p[ong delay, a tape echo simulated delay and a dual head tape echo simulated delay? Examples would posssibly prove useful here!

    * Slap back. Just that. Hit a note, the note repeats back instantly, once (or more). Stereo allows you place the output of the delay across more than one output. You could have a delay set up for two repeats for example, and have one on the left side, and one on the right side. Not really too sure about the ping/pong thing... the tape echo and dual tape echo, are just delays, however they're more of tonal preference. Older sounding, analog.

    Reverb...Difference between Wet air and Dry air, Room reverb, pplate reverb, Hall reverb and Spring reverb?

    *All of these are reverbs, and are a matter of preference. It really depends on what sound your going for. People could try to explain what they all sound like, but then your very much into the subjective. Try them and see what you think of each of them.

    * Guitar w/ EMG pickups, chorus, delay. Marshall sounding overdrive..? Not to sure.

    B/ Petrucci

    * Ernie Ball JP guitar, Mesa Boogie Road King or Rectifier amp. Delay.

    * A 5150 head isn't really going to sound much like JP, IMO.

    If someone could unlock the basic effects Luke and John use for their studio albums etc that would be a great start!

    Thanks man! Was beginning to give up hope on anyone chucking in on this one! Thats a great help! I'm starting to record so thats the reason i wanted to know! Settings and examples of specific tracks would be good to know too! For example Johns Suspended animation album - how to achieve a similar tone. I realise the 5150 isn't gonna cut it for a JP tone but I'm using that as the external speaker ie turning of the preamp and using the Korg to model amps etc!

    If u got a good rectifier modeler in the Korg that can be a good reference point to start looking for the Jp sound, I have the gnx3000 and it has the road king model from the mfxsupermodels, kicks ass , for the JP cleans the middle position is the ticket. The ping pong delay is basicly a delay that alternates the feedback between the left and right channels, like going back and forth so if u hit a note and u got the delay to 4 repetitions u will hear for example the first on the right speaker the next one on the left, the next on the right and so on, thats basicly it

    Whats a RECTIFIER...?

    Does the Korg model a Mesa Boogie amp at all? I could list all the amps and cabs it does model but the thing is they don't list brands ie they list things like...US HIGH GAIN TWEED COVERED AMP....etc

    Here they are in full:

    Clean channel of a high end 100W hand made amp
    2x12 combo amp indispensable for country or blues players
    Combo amp covered in tweed cloth
    4x10 combo amp designed for bass guitar
    VOX AC15 manufactured in 1982
    Brilliant channel of a VOX AC30TB
    UK - manufactured vintage stack amp head
    UK - manufactured 1983 model 100W head with master volume
    UK - manufactured 100W modern amp
    High-gain amp with eye catching metal plate (could this be the 5150)

    High Treble channel of a UK-manufactured 1969 model

    If anyone can help me identify what each of the above may be that would a great help! And which one(s) may be a good reference point for a JP and a LUKE sound....
