Takes more effort on a five.
We may only need a four string, but some of us wanted more...

Actually, 5-string players are secure enough in their real man-ness that they don't feel the incessant need to talk about it.

It's just tools, you play what you feel comfortable with![]()
bovinehost: Yes, I do agree with that, but if there's nothing wrong then there's nothing wrong.
Beth: I would compare Bongo to Tommy Lee Jones. Bad a$$ and just hot in a weird way...
cheezewiz: They should take their lace thongs off and play bass.

To each, their own... but there's just something about the earth-shattering low b on a music-man...

I have recently longed for the simplicity of a 4 banger, then I hit a note on the B string today and promptly stopped longing

Today I'm content with four (and have been for years)
Stingray. 4H, Buttercreme 2005 L.E. (E46580, 05/05/05.) Coated Hybrid Slinky's.
Stingray. 4H, Vintage Sunburst. (E47406, 31/05/05). Hybrid Slinky's.
GENZ-BENZ. Amp's...
Had a 5 for a while, a pretty nice one (not MM). The string spacing was rather tight, and I really found it hard to do anything but play fingerstyle (I have heard the MM 5's have a wider spacing). Also, I was just using the low B like an octave pedal, really only hitting notes down there at the end of a song or on a build-up. I am happy with 4 for now.
but...to each his own...if you make the music you want to make on a 13-string then go for it!

BP: "I am very proud of many of the creations at ebmm but none more than the Bongo. Every day the cult grows and it makes it all worthwhile."
Err, why not just get comfortable with both? Opens up more possibilities.
I prefer pick on a 4 string...5 string calls for fingerstyle everytime.

As a fiver I would not want to go back to a four string. When I was a 4 stringer I hesitated to try the five. Now I wonder why anyone would want to play a six. Different styles, different music, different people. Heavy metalist probably have no need for the low B string. Country bassist most likily no need for the high C. Small handed people would probably prefer the middle ground 4 string. I personally like the lower end of the bass, very rarely using the G string. It works for me so I stay with it. No one set up is better than the other. It's not the Number of strings you have, but what you do with the Ones you've got.
Bass starts with B.
