Where to get started with Morse, Petrucci & Lukather??

Hello all,

So I'm going to plead my ignorance here......I don't have any CD's by Morse, Petrucci or Lukather, and I'm intrigued.......if I wanted to check out their music....where's a good place to start?......what CD's would you recommend?

Lukather - toto - kingdom of desire, Los Lobotomys - Candyman.
Petrucci - Dream Theater - Scenes from a memory or Images and Words.
Morse - Living Loud - Living Loud, steve morse band - Split desition.

Some additions to slukather:

- Steve Morse: Deep Purple - Perpendicular (Bananas - Abandon, in that order), Steve Morse Band - Major Impacts 1 & 2, and definitely: Living Loud - Living Loud!!

- Petrucci: also An evening with Petrucci and Jordan Ruddess, nice playing on there too.

If you combine these two posts and start of with those, I'm sure you'll have a good ear on Morses and Petruccis playing. I don't know much about Lukather apart from Toto (I know, have to work on that ;-).

Petrucci - any Dream Theater and his new solo album which you can buy online at his web site I believe.

Luke - see above

Morse - online somewhere I guess. I went and saw him live for the first time and dude was awesome.

John Petrucci:

1. "Images & Words" - Dream Theater
2. "An Evening With John Petrucci & Jordan Rudess" - Petrucci/Rudess

I am not familiar with Lukather's work outside of Toto. I'm sure we've all heard him everywhere since he's been recorded so much!

The majority of Steve Morse's output is with 2 bands. The Dixie Dregs. And The Steve Morse Band.

He did a poll on his website asking for his fan's favorite from each

High Tension Wires won by a huge margin on the SMB poll (though he considers it more a solo effort). StressFest (right after he joined DP) was 2nd.

I missed the Dixie dregs poll, so I'm not sure of the results. But my choices would be Bring 'em Back Alive (one of the best live recordings ever) and Dregs of the Earth.

UNSUNG HEROES is actually my top choice, but you'll never find it.

Luke, I'd get BAKED POTATO SUPER LIVE, if you can find it. Instrumental 80's fusion at it's best.

Petrucci-- I love his Evening With...cd w/ rudess.

Very cool.....thanks for all the suggestions.......since I've got to start somewhere, I think I'll start with Morse and see where I get to from there.

Ah yeah,

completely forgot about this one, but Morse just has a new CD out, it's called prime cuts and contains about ten songs from several of the above mentioned CD's. Might be a very good one to start with, should be out now.

Whenever I look at the "Steve Morse" section in a used CD store, there is usually only 1 or 2 discs there, and it seems like "Southern Steel" is always one of them. I think this is a great cd and definitely worth having. I think, by and large, it's "heavier" sounding than most of his other cd's, with the exception of "Coast to Coast", which is also a must-have.

Actually, pretty much anything that Steve plays on is a must-have for a lot of us.

"Southern Steel" doesn't seem to get a high level of interest, but I love it. "Vista Grande" is one of my top Steve tunes ever. There's good stuff to be had on all his releases, tho...
