How about "Cut the Cake" or "Pick Up the Pieces" by Average White Band? Two more great funk tunes.
Starting to think about returning to bass playing in the very near future.

I have the Rocco instructional tape "Fingerstyle Funk", and it's pretty cool, cause throughout the course of the tape, he walks you through the entire "what is hip" song.

Blast the UK! Useless dang country!![]()
Just tried on our version of iTunes music store to find Brickhouse and 'Glide' by Pleasure, and they don't have them. Also looking for Bootsy Collins-Psychotic Bumpschool Live, no chance, ain't got it.
I feel a trip to the US is in order, to stock up on tunes and maybe get a MMSR at a reasonable price.

They're back together and touring. Go to spindoctors.com for their schedule. Mark is an incredible bass player.

I would consider most of what Jamiroquai plays as funk maybe a little disco-ish at times but still some very funky stuff. I love Jamiroquai and think every album has some great basslines. The new album Dynamite has some sweet basslines. It's actually not in stores yet, but you can buy it on iTunes right now.Originally Posted by bassplayer7770

This is cross-over into soul...but....
"I'll Take You There" -- Staple Singers.
killer groove - then a stepping out melodic solo for 8 bars, then bang back to the groove. You must play this line before you die!![]()
I play that ALL THE TIME.I'll Take You There" -- Staple Singers
Plus, if you're in the right key, you can play that bass line to a completely different song. Try it sometime - play the bass line to "I'll Take You There" behind the tune "Feelin' Alright" and tell me it doesn't work.
I do it sometimes to drive people insane.
I would say "Stone Jam" from old-school funk band Slave. Mark Adams, the bassist, had some killer chops for his young age (I guess they recorded their 1st album when he was still in high school).
"Hair" from Graham Central Station is also quite funky monkey...but then again....consider the source![]()
What IS it about that run midway through? I freaking LOVE it!Originally Posted by bovinehost

The main line is a fairly commonly copied (sometimes albeit on a variation) line, dontcha think?
Since I mentioned Mark White and the Spin Doctors earlier, how about "Little Miss Can't Be Wrong", "Jimmy Olsen's Blues" or "What Time Is It?"? Three great funk tunes from the Spin Doctors.

I remember seeing a concert in 1980 with Pleasure, Slave, and the Bar-kays. Pleasure opened and Nathaniel Phillips completely destroyed the place taking an extended solo for "Glide" on his Stingray. He was probably the first real chops monster that I ever saw live. The second act was slave, Mark Adams had given up his Alembic by then and had a J-bass. He was the first guy I ever saw with a rack mounted preamp. His sound was so clean and pure. Finally James Alexander with the Bar-kays came out. He had a P-bass and it was easy to see that he was out of the Stax school of funk/soul. Twenty-five years later, that show is still one of the musical highlights of my life.
All this to say I love Mark Adams too. He was one of the first commerical funk/r&b players who went all out in the use of high end for his sound. His "Touch of Love" and "Snapshot" and "Watching You" are still tough to beat for a super funk sound.
Also check out the CD "Best of Slave featuring Steve Arrington" for some really great Stingray funk. Steve Arrington's "Weak at the Knees" and "Nobody Can be You" have killer Stingray tone.
