Well fellas, got another Tony Levin OLP at the store today and man, you guys have got a good thing going. A really sweet piece of bass for the money, even cost aside it's a great unit. So this'll be TL #2 inside of 3weeks , both aged-natural, just waiting to send this out the door so I can get on the back-order list for a Peach one.

i remember someone (i think Jack) asking TL why he didnt have a sig MM at Open House and TL's reply was along the lines of: "cuz i like the basses the way they are". not the exact words but i beleive he said something to that effect ... (someone please correct me if im wrong)

as far as OLP, i dunno ... marketting maybe?

i believe the reason its olp and not musicman is because musicman doesnt need to make sigs to get artists to use their basses, or to sell them for that matter. Stringray is enough to keep them on and get them off the hooks

OLP is just another copy operation, not a partner or branch of EB. AAMOF, OLP makes Spector copies and possibly some others. You seem to imply something else..... Is the the Tony Levin sig model in particular some sort of corrobortation with EB MM?? Not that independent clones, copies or ho's are dirt in my eyes, but you made me curious about the TL in particular.

OLP is it's own entity and company but it was birthed ;to the best of my knowledge; out of the brains of BP and his buddy Gary Hanser(i believe) although it's Gary's baby, the designs for the 'MM' series of guitars and basses that OLP gets are officially licensed from EBMM and yes, the TL sig bass is as close to an EBMM StingRay5 you're gonna find for the money. The build quality is very consistent with the OLPs and the sound is good and the price..... good enough to get a beginner or hobbyist on their way to a full fledged EBMM some day.

Maybe it's just the bass line that doesn't need signature artists.

I think guitarists play signature guitars more in general than bassists due. I know i dont want a signature bass, for whatever reason.
