That is very typical of a bass that has been played a lot but not maintained too well. During the finishing process, the headstock is taped off and finished with a clear satin finish. The neck, on the other hand, is finished only with gunstock oil and wax finish. The satin finish is impervious to dirt, sweat and grime - the oil/wax finish is not. You can try cleaning the neck with several things: lemon oil, oil-based wood soap, even acetone. Afterwards it would be a good idea to re-apply gunstock oil and wax. Please refer to our FAQ section for more information on this.
Nice birdseye in the neck! We typically do not use birdseye on basses anymore.

I just bought a natural colour maple neck stingray with serial number E48428, built in '05 I think. Do you have more info about it?
Thanks,
Mats

Greetings,
I've got my eye on a Bongo serial #F15773.
Can you give me the low down on it?
Can you tell me if it has a piezo bridge?
Also, can you verify the info on F20866?
Many thanks for this cool service!
Steve

Hello everyone
I've been looking at an older music man sterling serial #43840 and was wondering if you could provide me with more information about the bass. Thanks for the help.
Hi everyone. This seems to be the best place to make a first post.
I have purchased my first new bass: Bongo #F18695. I completely fell in love with it's playability.
What can you tell me about this SR with SN D06513?
Thanks
Hi,
I have a stingray, serial #B022990
Hey, I was wondering what year my stingray is? The serial # is E16409
The "B" serials apply to both Pre-EB and Ernie Ball Sting Rays but no official records exist. Can you describe your Bass...colour...fretboard wood...3 or 4 bolt neck...top load bridge or strings through the body? Is the string retainer on the D&G strings (Pre-EB) or A&D strings (EB). The Pre-EB also has three position markers past the 12th fret while the EB has four. That should give some indication of age. The most accurate way to date your Bass is to have the neck removed as dates are located on the neck heel and in the neck pocket.
How about a little love for my new Bongo? F24964

Steve, here's what our database tells us about #F15773: This is a Bongo 4 single H in Egyptian Smoke finish, no piezo, black ice pickguard, originally shipped to Pianos & Stuff Music in Pittsburgh, PA.
The info on F20866 is: StingRay 20th Anniversary rosewood matching in California Sunset finish. Shipped to The Perfect Bass in Baton Rouge, LA.
