    Well,

As a faithful DR (Hi-Beam) user up until recently, I would recommend D'Addario Super Bright Roundwound (Pro Steels) Strings. They are about as affordable as the Slinkys and more affordable than DR.

They really sing on Mr. Ivory!

After a while, I noticed that with DR strings, they are more suitable for a Fender Jazz-type bass than a MusicMan. They just don't bring out the "MusicMan" sound in my MusicMan like the D'Addarios have done.

As for Sadowsky strings, the same. Great sound, feel, made with with a lot of body to them (for lack of a better term), but more suited for a Jazz Bass. Not to mention, being less affordable than D'Addario, as well.

Even though nickel is said to be better for one's frets, I prefer the brillance of steel. If I need new frets, then I need new frets... There will be no string compromise...
    Mr. Light

You should always B sharp, never B flat, and just B natural.

    I say it's simple
Get EB Slinkys, and if you want stainless stell they've got them too.
If you don't like the feel of EB, get D'addarios.

Ok, there are some real string factories out there that actually make strings, like DR and LaBella, but most brands are just brands. They specify core-wrap ratios, taper-whatever and colour on the ball ends, but It's still just strings.
bovinehost: Yes, I do agree with that, but if there's nothing wrong then there's nothing wrong.
Beth: I would compare Bongo to Tommy Lee Jones. Bad a$$ and just hot in a weird way...
cheezewiz: They should take their lace thongs off and play bass.

Bongo 5 H, Dargie Delight, in some cave somewhere...

I use and like d'addario XL half rounds .. softer than round but brighter than flats .. and less wear on the ebony of the fretless.

I love the sound of Super Slinkys on my SR4. I tried a set of Elixir Polywebs, but I preferred the tone of the Super Slinkys. In fact, I put the original set of Super Slinkys back on the bass. Those strings have essentially been on the bass since I got it back around September or October! They're not as bright as they were when new, but they still sound "zingy" and have plenty of life left in them.

If you are concerned about your frets, want full tension, are thinking about nickel, and like taper core B-string, try D'Addario 70-series 1/2rounds. The 70-series is labeled "Pure Nickel Alloy". The 170 series is labeled "Nickel Wound" which if your read further is a nickel plated steel wrap.

I can't speak for the slap tone etc. Reading your initial post you play very differently than I do. I have one set of 170-series also strung up, and even allowing for the differences in basses, they are much more pingy and snappy than the pure nickel. I play 170's with boxing gloves and a rag under the strings :-) With 170's you get the ring of roundwound steel but still get maximum fret life from the smooth outer surface

When you use half rounds on a fretless, how do you make sure the round wound side is up and the flat wound side is towards the fret board?
Starting to think about returning to bass playing in the very near future.
