    I kacked my right thumb.

Got caught on the big chainring while working on my full suspension bike. Can't believe I did it. I'm usually very careful around the moving parts. Sliced it right open. The cut wasn't too deep and about 1/4" long. Didn't need stitches and isn't in too bad of a spot. I can still play but it gets irritated after awhile from the index finger hitting it. Just frustrated and wanted to vent.

Worst hand injury I had was getting kicked by a horse that had bolted right in front of me...wearing horseshoes, of course!

Caught me from the outside of my left hand right between the pinky and wrist, and led up to about two inches from my elbow.

I thought my hand was shattered; it was numb for the better part of an hour. Big puncture at the point of impact about the size of an eraser head. Other than that, I was okay.

I was especially worried because I had just joined my Beatle cover band the week before, and thought I might not be able to play for a few weeks.

I was pretty well healed by practice time later that week.

Oh Dude! Horses scare the crap outta me. Everytime I run across them out on the trails here in Tucson, I stop, fully dismount, take of the shades and ask the rider how to proceed. I've felt threatened only twice in the 9 years here but would rather be safe than sorry. James, I'm really glad the injury wasn't more severe.

    Thanks for the thoughts ras.

If you want to talk hand injuries talk to Simon (mcvinyl) he chopped his thumb off with a drop saw! They managed to save his thumb. In fact they saved it so well, when he plays guitar it sounds like he's all thumbs

Tom, that sucks big time. Before I had a GOOD part time job, I worked at a grocery store and managed the daytime stock crew. The day before I was to go in the studio to record my first REAL CD, a box cutter got the best of me, and I sliced my thumb, on my fretting hand. It hurt like crazy to put pressure on it while fretting notes, but luckily, I was able to get the CD done. Didnt turn out too bad either. Hope you heal up quick, and remember, Neosporin (?SP?) is your friend.

James, one time I was riding a horse, and it went crazy. I swear it was trying to throw me off. Once I was down to hanging on only by one arm, I was saved. The store manager came out and unplugged it. Whew, THAT was a close call.

Ouch! But better the right thumb than the left I guess... Hope for a speedy recovery.

Re: horses - I love them but don't get a lot of exposure to them (growing up a city kid and all). Never comfortable standing anywhere behind them, though!

    Thanks, Tom.

You're doing the right thing by dismounting, etc. Some horses (and their riders) are pretty savy when it comes to the chance meeting with a cyclist...some aren't, and are spooked by a loud fart.

Next time you dismount, keep yourself between the horse and your bike...puts the horse a bit more at ease.

I just happened to be between two horses that I had just herded into their pasture, when one of them got spooked and bolted...with me standing three feet behind him. It happens.

Most horses are fine when they encounter cars and motor bikes, but bicycles, on the other hand are like silent aliens to them. I think the reason horses spook at bicycles is because they seem like something sneaking up on them silently, and since horses are a "flight" animal, they're thinking "WTF is that?"

Box cutters are nasty. I used to work grocery as well. All sorts of stuff growing on those blades. I was glad I never cut myself open. I'm just glad this cut is minor, more of an annoyance. Couldn't imagine a bad cut on the fretting thumb. Constant pressure, ouch!

My worst experience was at my current job. Burger King.

In the middle of one of those crazy Saturday lunch rushes and i'm the one scooping fries. Well, basic procedure when they drop fries to yell something to get your attention ( usually CLEAR!! ) Well, with it being a rush and all and me and the person dropping the fries had a nice little argument earlier, he decided not to call it out before he dropped them. Conveniently, I was scooping some at the moment and the fries (STRAIGHT out of the boiling grease) were dropped on my right hand.

I was sent home after my manager realized my hand was swollen and me screaming a few.... well, alot of profane words at my co-worker. I healed in a matter of 3 days but still.... ouch.

I have a big problem with my finger-tips. They split open because of some sorta dry skin condition. I ain't no doctor, but I glue the cracks together with krazy glue to keep them from spreading and it works very nicely. You might consider this to help you along with your injury, but like I said, I ain't no doctor. Proceed at your own risk.

I think Flea would do the same thing whenever his thumb would split open from the hyper-slapping he'd do every night on stage.

Don't get me started on those $*&%^*@ expensive hayburners! I don't have any now (thank you, lord), but I've been kicked, thrown, bucked and nipped...

They can be kinda cool, though...just as long as ya don't have to feed 'em!

maddog, I hope you feel better soon...
