I've often thought of it that way but never termed it (I have a few kids each year and wonder, why, out of the millions of sperm certain ones get through?).

Some people are blessed with the ability, talent, and drive to do what needs to be done. Others know how to find their niche to be happy. A rare few have both. Even fewer, can step back and realize and appreciate what they have and where it came from. BP, from our short conversations (too short ), the get-togethers, and your posts, you are one of those rare few! Merry Christmas!

I've said before that I'll wear whatever brand of sneaker the Balls want me to while I happily wait for the comet. Now more than ever.

Merry Christmas BP! I sure am glad you stuck with things.

I too will share a story about your instruments. I had never played an EB bass when I moved to Boston to study music. I had two Zon basses at the time and thought they suited me fine.

Well a very astute instructor of mine there gave me a 5 string Stingray to work on for another of his students. I did set up work for basically dinner money while I was there. The bass had been in an accident and had been soaked by the fire department trying to put out another vehicle fire.

I took the bass apart and slowly over two days cleaned and reassembled everything and set it up to where it should be. I began appreciating this bass more and more.

The short of it, I bought the bass from the kid who had it because he thought it was too heavy after the accident and sold one of my Zon's. My playing took a huge step forward and the EB bass felt more comfortable to me than any bass had so far that I had played.

When I left Boston, that same instructor asked me if I was not glad I happened upon that EB 5 string. He knew the answer already. His response to me was, "Why do you think I gave that bass to you to fix?" He knew it would fit my playing much better than the basses I arrived there with. He said that he had hoped that I would end up buying it.

From that time on, I have been playing and appreciating Ernie Ball basses.

Reading your thoughts makes me hope that, the day i'll be the same age as you today, i'll be able to watch the past and also feel happy (maybe even proud) about what I did...and EBMM would be a part of that, because it's one of the reasons why I enjoy playing music those days.

Thanks for sharing that -- it was a great to hear a little of your history.

Your comment about all the stuff you would just "do" with confidence back then reminded me of my father's reminiscing about his early days as a newspaperman up in Maine and then businessman -- along the lines of "I don't know how I was so confident then, but I just was, so I went for it". It's a good way to be.

Even though you're older and wiser now, it seems like you've kept the confidence to try new things and create new models -- and we players benefit!

As with many success stories, there is always a rich history of how it came to be. With some, there is a family lineage that consistently ties the origins to the present.

With many success stories family lineage and product origins remain simply as a foot note to the present shell of an organization it once was.

What I find special with EBMM is that this history is active and in the making every day - there remains the passion and the drive to do what's necessary to make better tools for musicians - not more tools, not cheaper tools, not "cool" tools - better tools, always pushing the envelope to improve and do things for the right reasons.

Along the way, BP provides the opportunity to understand the history - both the past history and the history in the making. The bumps and bruises and the success stories. It creates a welcomed, intimate relationship with the instrument. A G!bson or F@nder player just can't understand.

Like many of us, I have met BP, spoken with him, asked questions and provided opinions. As a result I, like many of you, have had the opportunity to be part of this history. For that I feel priviledged - not crazy - priviledged.
