Very OT: Vent

I'm so POed right now. I lost a bunch of email messages because a folder/mailbox disappeared (work emails for one, and a few others) AND my external hard drive with all my music (that isn't backed up on discs) just crashed. I was working on backing the music up, but ran out of discs and hadn't gotten new ones. Hundreds of dollars worth of music (57 CDs/Albums to be exact and a few extra songs here and there). and at 9.99 an album from iTunes it totals to $596.43 or or $12.95 (average) for 57 physical CDs it totals to $738.15

Mailbox disappeared yesterday, Hard Drive happened today.

Music? Doubtful as the drive is crashed, gone. Only thing to get the drive working again (that I know of) is to reformat it. That means the music files will be gone too.

The Mail maybe, as the folder and files are still there. Just need to find out how to import them back into the mail app.

I don't know what prices are like over there right now, but here, storage is just stupid-cheap. We're talking like a TERABYTE disk for under $400.

The hard drive on our home machine decided to go to Tahiti and left no forwarding address last fall. I bought a replacement, and at the same time did a few other things:

1) Took an old laptop drive and created a portable, dire-emergency boot drive.
2) Bought an external drive twice the size of the internal drive, just for backup.
3) Got into the habit of backing up once a month or so.

I feel all cozy and secure now.

I guess that's one advantage of being an old fart...all my CDs are actually on CD (or even vinyl).

I've had a bad day too......but turn on the TV news and you'll see a whole lot of people who had a much worse one.

Most of my CDs are on CD, but I ran out of discs to put the music on (I remember I needed exactly 57 discs for the albums) and hadn't gotten around to getting any discs. (I bought 50 to begin with and ran out). I have over 200 albums and the 57 lost were not on CD yet.

And I know there are people out there worse off.

It's not so much the drive I care about, I can get a TB for $600 or 500GB for like $200. It's the music I'm bummed about. I can't even remember which CDs they were (except for a couple) as I was in the process of backing them up and ran out of discs. So I can't remember all my albums and which ones weren't backed up yet.

Regarding the music, if you bought them all from iTunes, you could go to your iTunes account and look over your purchase records, right?

Can I do that online? My iTunes email receipts were part of the folder that disappeared. When I get that back, I should be able to look over the purchases, yes.

have you tried any of the hard drive file recovery programs available online?

I rescued a load of files off of an old hard drive that was formatted using one called PCInspector.

You might want to look around for one. Try R-Studio as well...

dude..........hard drive has a decent possibility to come back.........you'll need a comp guy to do it though cuz,they have all the bells and whistles eh.


took my guy 3 days but.......he got all my tunes,vids and pics back..

but they needed to go onto a new hard drive though.

the one that woulda hurt was all the original work that my two bands did..........we had mega stuff on this comp.

all now tucked safely away on discs.

My dad, a total computer guy (he's an IT/Systems Administrator for the US Government for the last 20 years and used to do it as a hobby before that) is in Mac's Terminal trying to repair it manually from the Master Block through Terminal.

As an IT guy, my recommendation is that you print out those mp3s and keep a hard copy as a backup.

Last year I lost 27gigs worth of tunes and this year I lost 32 gigs, so now I always back up every time I buy anything off itunes
