    oh my joy a Bongo

For A while now I have been looking for a Bongo, not to buy but just to try one out and see what Adouglas and the guys are so caught up on.I have grown to really like the look of them and I saw Bowie's Bass player using a Bongo and it sounded and looked great. But before I get one I really want to just play it.

No store in Ireland seems to stock them so I put out an add to see if I could find one for a private sale.Oh my joy when I got a call from a guy who had one and was willing to sell it,I didn't even ask him how much he wanted or which model it was,he did sound like he knew very little about guitars "my son asked me to sell it for him"
I hopped in my car drove for 2 hours and this is what i found

I just had to take a photo of it (the whole no bass no pic thing)
All I could do was laugh,If I had of taken my time and asked how much he wanted then I would have know that for €70 it was never going to be a Bongo.

Isn't that one of those really early prototype Bongos? It was the one with the 9V Vol,Vol, Tone preamp. I would love to get one of those, probably worth alot of money!

In that case, I think it has to be a "Flying Vongo" lol. I'm glad you got some good laughs out of it.

Have you tried a Gibson Flying V bass? I'm quite partial to certain Gibson basses, but having tried a V myself, I can tell you they sound like arse. The body is too light and the soapbar pickups they used were quite wimpy. Some TB Plus pups might make a difference, but I still think the lack of body mass would cripple the sound.

I just stopped liking anything Gibson made. I played new and old EBs, T-Birds, LPs, Double Cuts, and to me they all sounded terrible, or at least not versatile enough to be even considered. I prefer the wonderous bolt-on necks that are offered by EBMM.

Anyway, it does suck that you had to drive out there and wasted time and money, but keep looking for a Bongo! They really are amazing pieces of work.

It's really difficult to play sitting down, unless of course you wedge your right leg in the 'V', and then it looks like you're playing something other than your bass.
