HELP!!! Problems with my Q-Tron+...

Hi all, as said in a previous post by myself I was able to get a Q-Tron+ off of eBay for $55, the thing is that it was a liquidation item and all they knew was that it powered on and I know nothing of its past. I just got it in today and I'm pretty sure it is not working properly. When I have it set to bypass I have my amp and bass (Blue Dawn SR4 ) loud enough to shake the walls of my tiny room at a seminary (perhaps overdoing it!), but when I engage the effect I might as well not even be plugged in. I have the gain turned up and set to boost mode so that it should scale with the incoming volume but no dice. Does anyone know what the problem is or what I could do to fix it?! Thanks in advance!
