He used Ampeg in later Rage. The period we're talking about (recording of debut album); SWR.
This clip is from early period Rage:

    What difference an amp makes....

....to the sound. This is a interesting clip. Now it's 1994, and Tim is using Ampeg but is still with the Stingray. Really different. You can also spot his next main bass "standing in the shadows" waiting to put that poor 'Ray out of a job.
Also cool backing vocals by Tim starting at 03:09 and a really cool looking guitar that Tom Morello is playing in this clip. When will EBMM do a chrome Axis??

    That's because it's a 2-band StingRay.

    I love my 2 bands!

Awesome videos guys, thanks for the links. I still like his Stingray tones better than the Jazz, even though they are pretty similiar.

Yeah, I know But he does use a lot of effects (some are secret), custom wound pickups etc., and while he plays jazzes live, supposedly did not use one to record Evil Empire. The Ray sound is still punchier.

You guys are right though, a 'Ray with a little drive and treble up a bit comes very very close. Either way it's a fantastic sound for anything. A compressor helps a bit too.

He used his natural Fender Jazz to record Evil Empire.

True - bass must have 3 critical ingredients to sound that way . . .

    1- 2-band EQ StingRay
2- must weigh over 10 pounds
    3- must have maple fretboard

You're just kidding yourself if you think you can pull that
tone out of anything else . .
