Ok. Generally I don't want to stress my ears. A drummer I used to have played also in another band twice per day and guess what! From 8 o'clock in the mornin' till 2 pm, he worked in the demolition business. He handled the compressor(this is LOUD) for all these hours everyday with NO earplugs. He told me that everyday ehen he finished the demolitions, he felt like his head would break in 2 pcs. And he was laughing. And he laughed even more when I told him to use ear protection. He already has lost a great amount of his hearing because he thinks that "nowadays everything can be repaired". He believes that when he becomes stone deaf he'll just buy another pair of cochliae and eardrums and start from the beginning. When you speak about nerves, neurology hasn't a clue on how to repair destroyed nerves and fibres.

That's bad! They still have trouble repairing the ears, thats why so may people use hearing aids. I have been told that hearing aids are a royal pain in the @#%!

I wear earplugs religiously. Used to use the hearos ones, but then found these nice ones from etymotic research (https://www.etymotic.com/ ). For a set with a string to wear around your neck, I think it was in the neighborhood of $18. Nothing outlandish, and they work well. Gives a bit more clarity of sound than the hearos.

I've been using these for a year or so and really like them. I've lost a lot of hearing in my left ear from having a car with no AC, and driving 60 highway miles round trip to work in the Arizona summers with the window down for over 12 years...well you get the picture.

Yep! That will hurt the ears! I damaged my left ear in a factory from the noise! I have been babying them since. Not much hearing loss but a little!

I don't wear earplugs anymore because it's uncomfortable..

I do however wear these earmuff things like you see landscapers wearing. They cut out teh harshness and keep things fairly audible at the levels at which my bands play. Plus the drums sound way better with them on. and the bass cuts through better.

for example of wearing them, look at the guitarist from linkin park, he's wearing some i think.

you can get them at hardware stores and sportinggoods stores..

    enjoy

apparently, cymbals do the most damege to your ears - the harsh higher frequencies. Also, tinnitus cannot be healed.

I've got some molded earplugs with a -15db cap in them and I never play with out them, or go to concerts for that matter with out them either. I usually make sure to set my tone and volume levels with them out at soundcheck(not with the rest of the band playing though) and then put them in. The do help clean up the sound on stage though, they really cut out the harshness of high level sound.

Maybe the real solution is to just throw some towels on the drummers' cymbals? Hehheh

Electric drums are very nice, we have a set. If I think the drummer is getting to loud I give the old turn down sign. Loss of hearing is no fun thing, believe me I know; My keyboard player knows better so than I. He has to have a monitor right by him so he can hear himself and the rest of us playing. If need be, It is wise to get used to the ear protection. My wife gets very tired of me always saying huh!what did you say!!!

My wife says I am going deaf. I usually reply with "What?" She doesn't seem to appreciate that too much.

Seriously, I have tried earplugs on a few occasions but have always found them to sound unnatural. It's like I can hear myself swallow over anything else. And I like it LOUD! But what's a guy to do?

It works exactly like a bank!

Either you spend a few of your money from your account every now and then, and it lasts for a lifetime or.......

You empty the account for a shopping spree!!!!

    BUT

You end up with no money(and no hearing)

Only in the bank case you can still get a job and get on with your life.

Very well said; darn hearing aids are bothersome and good ones are very expensive. I have been checking into them but haven't took the plunge yet plus, I don't wear ear plugs, I agree with the sound being completely off. I JUST LEARNED TO TURN THE MUSIC DOWN A BIT.!!!
