    Stingray Questions

I just acquired a 99' Stingray, 4 string, 1 pickup bass. It has the 4 knob set up. I have some questions about it. I also play a Jazz Bass with EMG active pickups.
    1. The MM is 2 or 3 times louder than the Fender, is that normal? They both have new Duracells in them.
    2. The action on the MM is poor, when I lower the strings to a decent height I get bad fret buzz. I'm sure there has got to be some adjustments to help this. I would like to get the action smoother like the Jazz is.
    3. When played at higher volumes I get a trebly clicking sound when playing notes anywhere on the neck. It's not fret buzz but more like a pickup problem.
    4. I noticed the poles on the E and G are lower than the A&D. Is that normal?
Since I bought it used I'm not sure what has been done to the bass by the previous owner. It sounds great and I would like to take care of the few problems
so I can start using it. Any help would be appreciated.

Congrats on the Stingray, I'm sure you'll love it when you get it set-up properly, let me see If I can help you, the best I can....

    1. I don't have any active Fenders, so I'm not sure what the output difference is between Fender and Musicman

    2. Try a truss rod adjustment. If you can't get it how you want, take it to a reliable guitar tech and they'll set it up good for you, and put your action where you want it.

    3. Not sure, may be solved after you get #2 taken care of.

    4. Nothing is wrong with your poles, on single pickup Stingrays, the E and G strings poles are lower, while the A and D poles are raised.

Hope that helps, and I'm sure others will chime in and help you as well.

PS - Welcome to the forum

Also, if you don't have Ernie Ball Slinky strings on your Musicman, put some on there, the strings and bass are made for each other. My favorites are the Super Slinky ( Pink Package 45-65-80-100 ) and the Hybrid Slinkys ( Orange Package 45-65-85-105 )

This puts the pole pieces at a more consistent distance from the strings than if the pole pieces were flat all the way across the pickup, for more even volume from string to string. So - it's a good thing!

Sounds like it needs a good setup job (truss adjustment, maybe a little fret work and check the pickup height) and you'll be ready to rock!
