Acoustic Bass?

If this thread is poo... Mods by all means... kill it... Since the Earthwood acoustics are discontinued... I feel it should be fine to see who all here have an acoustic bass and why do you have it? I've been comtemplating about getting one... mainly for easier access to practice/won't bother anyone when I do and for unplugged situations.





Or this could be a dead thread because no one here has an acoustic....

I have a Grestch ABG that I use for that exact purpose...easy practice. Figuring out songs or working on stuff in front of the computer. Noodleing while watching TV or whatever. Great for that.

I play a washburn ab10 also for the same kind of stuff. its a great bass for the price i paid.

I had a Fender BG31 (or so) some time ago. Never felt quite happy with it, so I sold it.

A friend of mine has a fretless Cort which sounds very nice, but I guess most of the interesting tone comes from the natural "mwah" of the fretless board.

Happened to put my hands on a Godin A5 and on a Warwick Alien. Both were very nice. A bit on the pricey side, though (at least for me who don't have a major interest in electric-acoustic basses).

I have an Ibanez AEB something or other that I beat on occasionally when just jamming with friends in the yard. I wish somebody would come up with a rounded top because it starts to hurt my right arm after a while on that front edge . What kind of strings do you guys use ? It has Black Tapewounds on it right now that make it thump plus it matches the bass. It had bronze, but I took them off. What's a good EB set of strings for acoustic bass ?

On another note, at the time I thought about putting the bronze on one of my electrics to see what it sounds like but didn't. Anybody ever done this ?

Tacoma Thunderchief here. I looked around for a long time and it was the acoustic bass I liked the most that was reasonably priced. Good, big, sound. It matches a loud acoustic guitar in volume. My right arm hurts too after awhile playing that thing because of the body shape. But it´s most likely the same problem with all acoustic basses. I use bronze strings on it.

i use it to do recordings with too,it's got that nice of a sound.........just add it under the Sterling and...........i'm laughin'.

I have 2. I got the first one -a Rogue- yes I know-- mostly for sitting around on somebodies porch or backyard bbq jams and for camping trips, just sitting around the fire playing-- and I wouldnt really care if something bad happened to it, like if one of the kids kicks it into the fire or beer gets spilled down the sounhole.

Then I wanted an actual good one for an acoustic project I was involved with, so I got an Olympia- a cheaper version of a tacoma thunderchief-- and it actually sounds pretty good, as long as there is only 1 guitar playing in the room with it. More than 1 guitar, and it needs an amp for the bottom end. And so if I am gonna plug in, then why am I playing an acoustic? Anyhow, I use bronze martin strings on both of them.

Never tried an Earthwood, but have owned a couple of acoustic basses over the years as well as trying out others in stores (Guild, Martin, Taylor, Ibanez, Washburn), and in my opinion they're ok for noodling on in the living room, but any decent solid top acoustic 6 stringer will kill them for volume, and against a couple of 6 string acoustics and a vocalist you're wasting your time.

For "unplugged" gigs you'd be plugging in anyway, so why buy an "acoustic" bass when you already own a great EBMM bass that sounds pretty good plugged in? Same goes for quiet practice at home that doesn't disturb the kids or dog - why fork out hundreds of dollars for an acoustic bass when you can buy a top quality headphone amp or bass trainer for far less money, and use that with an EBMM bass for quiet practice.

I've got a Washburn AB45 which I mainly use for home practice and whenever we play in churches with the childrens choir.

Been pretty happy about it. I just need to take of the low B and add a high C

I have a 5 string fretless Harley Benton acoustic bass, and I used it for my band's first demo: http://www.myspace.com/aliquotflow

It's the first fretless I've owned, and I've now defretted my Harley benton electric 5er.

The producer notioned that it has a kind of tuba-ey sound to it, and it does sound good although a bit too warm in the mix. I bought it on a whim, and I hardly ever use it now. It's impractical for live situations because of the feedback issue so I only use it if I'm at home, as mentioned before, for noodling.
