Unhappy Feeling blue - but talking bongo's will help me

    Hey doods

I had some really bad news at the weekend, a GREAT freind of mine passed away...... i need to indulge a little bongo talk if I may, he would understand.

I might need to have a rethink on my GAS list, I took a trip to Denmark Street, London at the weekend as i figured it would be my best bet to try out a couple of prospective bongos, and thus cheer me up a little.

The two I found were both HH's (a 5 and a 4) and although they were setup really nice. I just couldn't get along with them.

I tinkered away, but everytime i started to settle in. That dammned 2nd pup just jumped up and slapped me in the chops. I guess im just too clumsy or fussy or something.

For the 1st time in a while though, im thinking maybe i need to try a Sterling or god forbid i even looked at a Burns, i must've been dillusional (there was a sweet '78 Stingray too, but it was REALLY pricey) .. but and this is the kicker, do you think I've just found MY bass already? Is everything else just going to pale in comparison? That thought is both comforting and depressing at the same time.

the thought that i'll constantly be looking for another special bond never to find it, but at the same time, always knowing ive found a special bond... weird.

PS. i also had to end it with my other half last night, things have gone bad in castle mammoth

thanks for leting me indulge, i know in the grand scale of things i'll be ok. but it doesn't half kick you in the nuts sometimes....

Your single H Bongo could be THE bass for you! But there ain't nothing wrong with checking out a Sterling, you can have more than one favorite bass... it gets expensive though.

I'm sorry to hear about your friend and home situation, but we're family here and we're here for you. We can talk Bongo's as long as you need to. Let me know if there is anything I can do.

Cheer up mate, sorry about your friend... it'll get better with time. Other halfs come and go, but friends are forever. As far as the bass, I know what you mean, everytime I pick a bass up, I'll compare it to my SR5 and nothing can hold a candle to it so far. It's depressing when you have GAS and you check something out and then realize there's no sense in even getting it, because what you have is better

My heartfelt condolences on your loss.

About the Bongo... Do you mean you had problems with the second pickup physically getting in the way, or with the sound you were getting by messing around with it?

If it was the sound -- I've got an HHp 5 string. The only control that I leave in the same place pretty much all of the time is the pickup selector. It just sounds best to me centered. So in effect, I suppose you could say I've got a single-pickup bass. Therefore...second pickup, no issue. The danger of having so much control over your tone is that you can make a bit of a dog's breakfast out of things if you go too far.

If it was the pickup getting in the way -- of course, the H Bongo is a great choice. One of Poppa's favorites. The HS also has a lot more room...more than you might think.

I do not understand the question. Of course you have.

No need for it to be depressing. Bongo can make it all alright. Bongo creates a happy place and gives you an all-access pass. Bongo can make your heart go pitter-pat. Clinical studies show that Bongo releases endorphins and acts as an anti-oxidant. Bongo fights cavities. Sterling and Stingray are fine, fine basses, but Bongo is special.

    Bongo uber alles.

thanks for the kind words guys, its great to know there's always a bunch of bass-nut-knuckleheads to bleed your heart to, and in return you guys make me chuckle.

but back to bongo talk! (im feeling a little better already!)

as regards the pup "slapping me in the chops" it was 99% physical, just plain in the way. there wasn't enough room infront, behind... anywhere! it felt like i was trying to "make it" with a couple of groupies in a bass drum, sounds like fun.. but sure is a bit cramped.

the 1% is more how much i LOVE the H bongo eq... its tweak and go, a veritable plethora of sounds (the only ones I cant get are the pup pan all the way neckward, and all the way bridge.. if you get me.... but those aren't everyday mammoth grooves anyway)

the HH knobs confuse simple mammoth!!

i guess the HS option is still eluding me also.... anyone got any experience of the differences?? bare in mind im a neanderthal!

I need another weapon!! i suppose there is always fretless, but the chance of me finding one to try are near impossible!

    thanks again pals

First off sorry to hear of your friends passing. It also doesnt surprise me that you split with your other half as usually people make some decisions in time of grief.......Maybe just call it a time out and see how you feel when the emotional pendulum swings back towards regular.....

I love the single H bnogo everybody knows that.....I also love the sterling and think you should try the HS Sterling......

cheers pops, i think losing my freind has made me finally realise life is too short and precious to accept second best. As in life, as with basses.

I guess if Big Poppa suggests I gotta try the Sterling HS, I try the Sterling HS! now lets see if I can actually bloomin find one. hehe

Before BP made the HS Sterling suggestion, I was going to steer you towards the HS Bongo. You still get the meaty sound of the neck with less pickup in your way.

My upcoming SR5 purchase will either be single-H or HS...haven't decided yet.

Hope you're feeling a bit more "up" after these postings; we do try.
