    In the '70s some of the Punk bassists (who never played an instrument before) did that to learn how tho play their songs. Paul Simonon of the Clash is one famous example.

    I try not to even look at the fretboard when I am playin..

    Never did this but I came from a fairly schooled approach.

    Yep. Played notes on the neck.
    Taped them to the deck.




    Seriously, no. But I'm a pattern/scale player anyway (that patterns work in the bass is what I really like), and have a hard time to even name all the notes on the first five frets.

    no, i can find any note i need if i think about it for a min or two, i do have some of the fretboard memorized but not 100% of it yet, but mostly i play by shapes, patterns, scales, and what sounds good to me.
