2nd bass in rotation

Now of course my Stingray5 is and probably will always be my 1st option, but I need to get a 4 string and cannot afford another Stingray. So if one had to choose, what would you go with. A Tobias Pro4B model (made by Gibson) or one of the new Warwick Corvette Special editions (Rock bass version). I have played both and they both sound good. Tobias gets a little shaky when playing up high, and can be a bit "twangy"(if that is a word. If not, it oughtta be.) The Rockbass feels faster, sounds sweeter and isn't getting the usual bad reviews that one would expect from 2nd tier guitars, like the Tobias' do.

I'm really thinking about getting rid of my SR4 and getting a SR5. Just kicking around the idea right now.

Have you tried the G&L Tribute L2000? Bass Player Mag gave it really high marks in last month's issue.

I always like Spector as a backup. Good even tone up & down the neck. EMG hz pickups sound real good and can easily be wired to 18 volts for more headroom and clarity. Look for a good used Spector NS2000/4 or NS2000/5 and I think you'd be happy with it.

Another option might be an OLP bass - never tried one but am hearing very good things on this forum about them.

Oh yeah for what it's worth; I just heard a player in our church using one of those RockBasses by Warwick and I was not impressed at all. Tone seemed dull and lifeless from the congregation - never played one though.

I ordered an G&L Tribute L2500 yesterday. I'm returning the pos Yamaha RBX775 that I ordered about 3 weeks ago. It has pretty good action, but I couldn't get one sound out of it that I liked. Eventually I will get an SR5. I just don't have the coins right now. Hopefully I can get a decent sound out of the G&L. I'll let you know next week when I get it. I would have prefered to buy a SUB 5, but it's appearance just doesn't appeal to me.

@#%*@!! I'll bet I looked at Ebay a dozen times yesterday and I guess that one came up after the last time I looked. Oh well, I'm really pushing the envelope by spending the $599 for the G&L anyway. The other thing is that I don't really want another black bass. OK, I've appeased myself now. Thank you.

Another vote for the G&L Legacy--I got to play one recently, and was extremely impressed. It's kinda in the Musicman neck of the woods, but definitely pitches its tent in it's own camp.

Nope - plenty of room with no mods necessary. Look at my gear page. There is a link to a .pdf file that explains how to do it for less than $5 materials including battery. It really helped the headroom and clarity of the EMG hz's.
