    Stingray 5 v. Sterling 5

How would you describe the difference in sound between a Stingray 5 and Sterling 5? Both 2 pickup.

    Any other differences?

I think there was a discussion about this if you do a search. I never owned a Stingray 5, but I can tell you, for me, the Sterling 5 is like a smaller version of the Stingray 5 and I just prefer the smaller body. I have owned Stingray 4's in the past, and my Sterling 4 sounds very much like the Stingray - once again, just prefer the smaller body. Your best bet is to find a dealer with one of each and a/b them for a while.

a search will yield a ton of info...

but here's a quick list of differences:
    body
    pickups
    neck
    preamp

honestly they're pretty much completely different

Also worth noting is that the magnets in the SR5 have changed a couple times. I dunno what years but I think they went from Alnico to ceramic and since the Sterling 5 came out they went back to alnico

Went with a Sterling 5 based on these "sterling" explanations.

Well, it is for a friend.

But the strings on the bass are the same as guitar, only bigger.

    Personally I have my eye on a Stealth Bongo . . . .

Guitarists sometimes play bass. Although we have an annoying habit of using guitar picks.

I used to alternate traditional bass plucking with a the use of a pick from time to time too, but now... after my accident, since I have only got half a thumb on my right hand I can't use a pick anymore and I don't think I miss it as much as I miss my thumb.
