    Uh oh :-(

This weekend we're doing 2 show with my band Nemesea.
We're doing 2 full surround concerts with big lightshow.

That lightshow can have a negative side. While I was off stage and the light was pre programmed my bass got to close to some floodlights (I think)
(I don't exactly know what happened because I wasn't there.)

When I picked up my bass when I got back I saw that the whole battery compartement was molten and the paint was cracked and a bubbly (sp?)
It's hard to see in the pics.

I'm always super carefull with my basses and now this has happened.

Does anybody know if EB does refinishes? (guess not)
I just want it back in perfect condition.

I don't know if the factory will do a refin for you on this, but your bass must have been incredibly close to the lights in order to melt the battery case like that. Wow, i'd be f'n freakin if that happened to one of my basses.

Are you sure that the rest of the bass wasn't effected as well by the excessive heat?

    Thanks,

Yes. It had to be the lights. Don't know what else could have caused it.
A battery compartment would help but part of the finish is close to peeling off.

I don't think a guitar builder can get the same finish that my SR5 has now.

Maybe a battery leak or overheat?

Wow, that must have been some serious heat!
I can't imagine how that would happen unless your bass was leaning up against (or 3 feet away) from a Par 64 can. We run a big lightshow too, and those get HOT....but we have moved to a lot of LED's so the inferno onstage is a little more tolerable.
Sorry, hope someone can help you get it back to perfect again!
I've seen a million basses, and I rocked them all!

Dude.... I would have a few words with the lighting crew first off.

That must have been inches away from a Par64 or the like. and I mean inches.
I've been on a few stages where 64s were about 10 feet away and that wasn't overly enjoyable in the least but to do that.... ya, that was sitting on top of a light.

sucks for sure. Does it still work properly (I'm assuming it does)

but ya, have some strong words with the lighting chief if they in fact moved your bass or lights while you weren't there and then this happened.

Problem is. I can't remember where exactly I put it before dinner. ( I know I know stoopid)
It was close to the lights on the drum riser but in order for the lamps to melt the bass it must have been lying (sp?) on it's side and half of the bass over the edge of the riser. Im sure I didn't put it there.
But you know... nobody saw or heard a thing...

Those flood lights are a LOT hotter than Par 64's I can tell you that.

On monday im going to call a bass builder with a good name.
See what he can do. But i dont think one is able to duplicate the EB finish.

Ill post some footage later. the lightshow is crazy sometimes.
Lasers, moving heads, moving beamers. Fun stuff.

Oh...and it does work :-) Good bass I guess! ;-)
Its only impossible to remove the battery without completely destroying the battery cover

WOW that's some crazy damage! I dinged my new Sterling pretty bad in the first few days of owning, but that's some serious melting there.

Think of it this way, you have found the perfect way to Relic a guitar

I'm sure you could get a local luthier to do a refinish and you should be able to get a replacement battery case. The only thing is cost ($300+ ?) and, as you say, getting the colour you want. You could always go for a different colour.

IMO a good luthier should be able to seal the colour so that it does not peel off anymore. If you need a refinish you could go with something unique or maybe have the back black like on the 20th. I'd be very reluctant to replace the body if it still sounds good and you like the sound bass as it is; different piece of wood will most probably sound different as well.

    All the best!

PS: Congratulations on having great shows! Just recently bought the Nemeseas album on iTunes... it's phantastic!
    Have bass. Will play.

Holy molten Music Man Batman!!! I can only offer my sympathy as I have no experience with having something like that refinished. I'm glad for you that it still works though! Good luthiers can do some amazing finish repairs. Best of luck.
I find it amazing that I can play all the wrong notes with such incredible accuracy.......
