Question PreEB Bass B008338 Natural Ash eBay

I'm selling this bass on eBay - we've had it since 2000
my sources here have it labeled as a 1976 Stingray 4 Natural Ash
but Rods serial number page places this close to 77-79.

Can anybody shed some light on my piece

the eBay auction number is 3744079293

    Thanks!

Probably more like a 78 or later. One way to tell for sure is pull the neck and check the date stamp. But everyone I've ever seen with B008.... is a 1978, notwithstanding claims from people who haven't seen the date stamp or bought the bass from someone who said, "It's a 1977" and accepted that statement without any backup info.

One thing I might change is that "oil and wax" finish comment - that's definitely a poly finish. Oil and wax is used on modern Stingrays, but only on the necks, never on bodies.

Another consideration is rating it "Excellent, Very clean showing little or no signs of use, all original or upgraded hardware." It does, in fact, show an awful lot of wear, which you describe in the auction. A bass from that era in excellent condition would not have a pretty severely worn fingerboard - your call, but I would rate that bass as in "fair" condition and then with a caveat about the fretboard wear.

All of that last bit is just my subjective opinion, of course, and you can happily tell me to go urinate up a rope. But while I'm at it, you've got it priced WAY too high for anyone I know to even have a 2nd look. At a starting bid of 1700 dollars or so, I would want to see a pristine 1978 Stingray.

This is not to say that someone won't come along and pay that, but it won't be anyone up-to-speed on old Stingrays and their pricing.

Cool bass, not trying to harsh your buzz or anything, just passing along what little I know about such things.

    oh wait!!!

    i get it now.

it's guitar center selling it, that's whats up.

222 is beavertown right? or am I mistaken.

    wow..

i would say it's an outstanding bass, but at that price, it's nowhere in the ballpark people will pay for one in that condition.

i'd say drop the price to starting bid of 1299 or 1300 and people will bid.

1776 is a big number to start.

I am very pleased with all your input,

    Thank You

The bass is located at Guitar Center San Jose, CA

I have it priced that way with no knowledge of the specific market for the pieces - this startihg price reflects that we paid over 1600$ for the piece .... I'll probably be pulling it off eBay and it will hang on a wall until the apocalypse... sad really

    I do also have a 2003 sunburst SR4 on eBay for 800$
    auction # 3743672128

    I love my job

    You're very welcome.

If it were me, I'd leave it on eBay and see if anyone bites. You might get an offer, although I really don't know about 1600 - but it's eBay, you never know!

    My take on the deal

Simply one time a dealer treated a customer to more than entitled too. I wouldn't buy at that price. The world should still know and understand even a beat up music man would be better than alot of basses.

If someone buys at the quoted price. Yeah they gave too much. Question is did they get cheated? Me thinks not. Did they make a serious mistake? Me thinks not if they are happy happy and heck a dent or two don't take away from the great QC of EB.

That said. I wouldn't buy and I would let it hang on the wall too until someone got tired of all the miserable basses I had on the wall and bought the MM at my price.

There really is two sides to a story.
