While I'm not 1/10th the player most here are, and I never have had the opportunity to build a bass, I am a bit of an audiophile and general "sound guy" who owns one of these beauties. I would say that my Deluxe Classic might sound marginally different--not objectively better but definitely perfect in my very biased opinion. If there is a slight design-based sound difference (haven't had a chance to do an A-B with another 2 band set the same), it probably results from the physical differences: slab vs contoured body, 7.5'' vs 11'' neck radius, string-through bridge with addition of mutes vs standard bridge, and poly-urethane vs unfinished neck.
Certainly, any change in weight, shape, and finish might contribute to making the bass sound a little different. However, in Tom's case, I'm guessing the most significant factors contributing to the amazing sound are his extremely happy fingers.
Looks great to me on my Classic. But, that's why EB offers so many great combinations and models. Get what you like. However, unless you've had a chance to actually see one of these (and probably even if you have), you might want to avoid comments like "looks cheap"; a simple "not for me" might be more polite.

Thanks, Greg. That's more or less what I figured: The difference in body and neck shapes (wood mass) and the finish of the neck. I am pretty certain that neither the string-through body design nor the mutes assembly have a noticeable impact on the sound -- I happen to have had both these design features on different Rays and it's always been the woods that made the real difference.
What I wondered was whether there is a change to the preamp or the body wood used for the Classic Series? It would be cool to have exact technical data for these instrument just to satisfy the curiousity. I mean all the Classics up to now are reportedly great and "vintage" sounding StingRays and it would be interesting to know the secret of their tone (if there is one except pure luck).

I would like a black one more. Thatīs all i wanted to say. Didnīt want to be impolite. Ok?![]()
Oli, I'm betting there is no electronic difference...and why would there be when the current 2 band eq is reported to still be the same circut used since 79.Originally Posted by oli@bass

As a big dyed-in-the-wool fan of the 2eq, I will say that my current '07 2eq and the other '07 2eq I sold earlier, both sound just like my '81 Ray (more being equal-it's also a top load bridge), and very close to my '78. All my knob settings are the exact same...makes sense; same circut, same settings, same sound.
I too can't wait for the Classic to become available. The round vintage profile specs of the neck and gloss finish is what I've been begging for for years!

If you want a black wheel, I'm sure you easily can purchase one from EB.

So let this matter rest. I am sorry for my words and didnīt want to be impolite, but FOR ME itīs too bling-bling. English is not my native language and i didnīt want to write a long sentence with too many mistakes in it. Some of you seem to be personally hurt by my post
Greetings,
Robert
Yeah, the poly finish on the figured neck and board is really sweet. Definitely gonna go with that (again), and if Fiesta Red isn't one of the first production colors after NAMM, I'll go with ... maybe I shouldn't say. It just occurred to me that one of the 2 colors that had been decided on as of the BPL show (according to what I heard there) is one that I'm pretty sure hasn't been mentioned or "revealed" here yet. In case that's intentional, I'd better keep mum. But that's what I'm getting if Fi Red doesn't take the 3rd spot (which was TBD as of BPL).

Nah we understand, there a many people here who's 1st language isn't english. However yours is probably better han mine, and I AM English. But yeah, you must remember to take lots of what is said here in jest, and not too seriously. I for one appreciate everyone's opinions, and if you havn't got the ability to express your view in another way (and not have loads of mistakes) that's absolutely fine. Sometimes, I even feel that there is a language barrier between me (and other British forumites) and those folks from the US of A.
