Look at the Fender designs. Always ask yourself whether what you question was possibly the easiest way to manufacture it. Mostly, the answer will be yes. Bolt on neck, pickguard, front mounted electronics, front jack...
    Have bass. Will play.

Only dummies don't run the cable through the strap so it can't be jerked out on either kind.

I would say you know which basses you don't want.

XLR would actually be a welcome improvement, much more sturdy connection, noiseless and locking... why are they not being used? it seems so obvious!

And FWIW i have never had a problem with the front mounted jack socket.

I want to know why basses weren't designed to do all the load-in/load-out work for me... far more helpful than where the jack is

Talking with one of my friends who builds - said it was easier/faster to put the jack on the front plate unless you have the heavy duty equipment to go in the side. May or may not have been the case with the Ray at the time.

Locking just seems like a rig ready to fall over.

It sure is easier to repair a jack in the plate rather than the body when it gets screwed up. That is reason enough right there to front mount them.

Remedy: common sense 101, run an angled cable through your strap. = no issue

I have no probs with the 2EQ control plate the way it is. In fact, I rather likey

If the jack is relocated to the body what happens to the plate...leave an empty space where the jack had once been...shorten the control plate...leave the plate the same length but space out the three control knobs?

    Nope, nope and nope!

    Why not?

Those two could be mounted front, bottom, or even rear on the preamp cover plate:

    Cable connector:

    Plate connector:

Of course, whole world industries of musical instruments and amplification must switch to that standard in this case!

Hey guys think about what you want.....you want a rigid cable between your bass and your amp....would you rather the plug pull out under stress or the amp head crash to the ground....or would you prefer ripping the faceplate off the bass....In any design there must be some place where stress can be released.
    Two requests, please

That's why I love the power connector on my Macbook Pro. It's magnetic, so if you step on the cable it just pops off... zero damage.

My last computer died because the dog trod on the cable and caused the thing to crash to the floor.

1/4" jacks are used because they've become a defacto standard over time, just like QWERTY keyboards. There are lots of things like this.

They work, so there's no real incentive to reinvent the wheel.
