    Cab Advice

I got a Stingray HH and I'm looking to upgrade my rig for it. Here's my situation:

I have a 200W AER "amp one" combo. This amp sounds amazing at gets surprisingly loud, but with only one 10" speaker it doesn't fill up the sound in a loud band. I want to get a power-amp and a cab to add to my set up so I can run my AER into the power-amp and into the cab.

I'm looking for something around 400W and if possible less than $600. I'm not sure whether I want a 4x10 or a 1x15. Normally I would get a 4x10 because I play with lots of highs and mids in my tone, but I was also thinking since sound would still be coming out of the speaker of my AER (and rather loudly) it might be better to get a 1x15 and almost have a mini full stack.

Any suggestions on what speaker set-up and any specific model I should look at?

sounds like you might actually want to look into a 2x12 cab. Avatar makes a pretty good one for under $400 dollars(but only mail order I think so you wouldn't get to hear it first). Mesa Boogie and Genz Benz both offer some very powerful 2x12's as well. Plus they're usually a little lighter than the average 4x10 and even some 1x15's. Otherwise, Craigslist always has some stuff pop up there in NY! Just my opinion though.
Bongos, stingrays, many colors, many years. I love em all!

Try some Bergantino, Epifani, Markbass, Schroeder and Genz Benz cabs if you can through your amp first... then buy used to make it in your price range.

I've had Avatar cabs. Great for the money - but I always found them to be boxy sounding for my applications. YMMV

I think he's looking for another combo, not an extension cab. However, I may be totally wrong...

I basically want an extension cab. I'd need a power amp and a cab, or an active cab for what I want.

I know Bergantino makes an active cab ...which is what your describing...but not in your price range.
I say, rent and/or go DI and save your gig earnings until you can buy a proper gigging rig. Honestly, shouldn't take more than one seasons worth of gigs.

I looked for some specs on your AER, but all I found is that the cab is an 8ohm 10. From the pictures on their website, it looks like there is a "sub" out on this amp. Is that a powered output? If so, you could probably pick up an 8ohm 210 or 115 extension which, with the 10, would put a 4ohm load on your amp. At 4ohms, you could probably get about 350w between the 2 cabs.

If the AER doesn't have a powered output, I wouldn't mess with the separate amp/extension cab. I would sell the AER and use that money, plus the $600, to get something that better suits your needs.

I disagree only because not only does he seem really happy with it as a practice cab(sound, etc) but a serious player always needs a small/lightweight/simple 2nd rig for practice, rehearsal, alt jobs, etc. He'll regret it down the road.

It's not a powered output. Plus I still need the small combo for little jazz ensembles and what not. Right now I'm running the line out into my drummer's Hartke VX3500 350W combo and bypassing the EQ on the Hartke. I love the sound I get out of that so I'm thinking of just getting one of those for myself.
