Three and a half Questions to my SR5

Hi there Guys (and maybe Girls of Course)

as you maybe know, my Stingray5 (Buford) is new to me and it´s my first Stingray ever and so I have a few Questions about Parts and Setup and I´m pretty sure you can help me.

    Here we go.

    1. Is there a recommended Pickups Height, or better said, Distance between Polepieces and Strings?

    2. I love this wonderful Neck. So great to play. It´s the first Neck that has no Satin Laquer Finish. When I´m right it´s waxed, isn´t it? What do you Guys use for Care and Maintenance? Are there special Waxes?

    3. I´d like to replace the Pickup Screws because they look a little bit "worn". I Would like to replace them for new ones. Do you know where I get them? Or otherwise, wich Measurements do they have? Because if I buy them in the US, the Shipping for 3 Screws to Germany could make them a little bit expensive.

3,5. At least a cosmetic Question. I think about to replace the matte Black Pickguard and like to install a "Black Pearl" one. I think that would look good to the "Trans Red" Finish of Buford. Or maybe other Recommendations?

Thanks alot and have a nice Day

Since the recomended Tung oil (Tungöl) is not readily available here in Germany I use "Antik Wachs" from Clou. Here is an explination of how I used it. Basical I use it to seal the front of the fretboard (where my fatty fingers initaly left dark spots after only an hour of playing) and a light coat on the back to "condition" it.

Inch sizes are actual pretty easy to get here in Germany. simply Google for "Zollschrauben". I dont know the size as I dont have a pickguard but someone else should be able to help you where.

    I hope that helps,

    Hey Tom!

Check out the faq-department oft the EBMM-Webpage:
    http://www.music-man.com/faq/music-man-basses/
It covers at least the first two of your questions (and along the way it gives you some further interesting informations about your bass!)

When It comes to pickup hight I usually just go by ear. Of course the factory settings are a good point of reference, but in the end its a pretty individual thing
Take a small screwdriver to yout band rehersal and try different hights in the context of the band. If you set it too low the tone will loose its contour and it'll get a bit "woofy", and if its to high you'll end up with ugly cracking sounds, when the string hits the Polepieces.

I think black perloid will be fine. I'm thinking about putting one of these on my transparent teal SR5...

In a local music shop I once saw a trans red Stingray with a tort guard. Absolutely gorgeous! That is what I would recommend.

I have a brand new unused Black Pearloid pickguard available for a SR5-H. There's a photo of it in the For Sale thread above. PM me if you are interested.

    Hi Thornton,

yours won´t fit on my SR5, because mine has the older Pickup Shape. It´s a 2002 SR5, but Thanks for the Offer.

    @mynan: Great Video. Thanks.

You can get the birchwood-casey tru oil and gunstock wax from ebay.uk. It is cheaper then canuba wax or something from tone toys.

Try to ask customer service if you do not find a pickguard on the web somewhere. Same with the pickup screws.

For pickup high it's all about your ears, but probably a little closer as you would go on a passive J or something...

if the neck feels good chances are all you have to do is put lemon oil on it periodically to clean it and you may never have to treat it with the wax. i havent had to yet because i take care of the neck with the lemon oil every 3 months as reccomended

@maintenance: +1 on Birchwood Casey Tru Oil and Wax

@pickguard: Keep the matte black (looks very classy IMO) or try abalone... which I've seen to combine very nicely with red instruments.
    Have bass. Will play.
