I've been playing for 25 years and have broken 1 string! I popped a D string too hard once and it broke.

It seems that someone posted that the pickguard on the Stingray and the S.U.B. were the same and can be switched out. The S.U.B. 5 is a different story though.
Starting to think about returning to bass playing in the very near future.

I'm pretty sure Jon confirmed that that it could be switched.

If that really is the case then you shouldn't just be worrying about string costs but rather our hands/wrists/arms , practicing is great but make sure you're not going to damage yourself. And I'm not too sure how many strings Flea or Marcus or Victor go through (most likely none) so take it a little easier maybe.

ive talked to my doctr about my wrists, he says that i was born funny. on the outer side of the arm there is a fat tendon that breaks if you put too much stress on it, mine cant break, they just stretch in and out. also, flea hasnt broken a string since 1983. he uses a new pack of strings every week, and when on tour, a new set of strings every day, even if he doesnt play the bass.

hmm something that will effect string life is how acidic your hands are when they sweat. Me I play a good bit and I usually change strings once a month. I have a friend however, with the mentioned problem and his strings die in a day. Like as in they sound like strings on an upright!!!

I had a 70's Jazz bass that I purchased brand new from Mannys in NY and I broke soooooo many strings on that bass I had to get rid of it.

Never figured out why. I tried all types of string and gauges. I would break them on stage, in rehearsal, and practicing alone.

I did not slap at that time and I don't play heavy handed. Like I said never figure it out, but very, very frustrating!

Never had that problem again on any other bass.
The surest way to fail is not to try.

Sometimes - especially on old Fenders and sometimes on Bad-Ass bridges - I found there were the tiniest little burrs on the saddles. Constant pressure against them made the strings break at the bridge.

For the longest time, I thought it was me. A magnifiying glass and a little piece of good sandpaper really cleared things up for me.

i read this in one of the bass players. flea tech changes his main basses strings before every show, and his over basses gets a new pair once a week.

id say check the saddles. you might have a burr or something like that that causes the string to break. its happened to me before.
