Pup height question

Hey guys,

new to the forum and just been having a quick look around. I've had my stingray for about 20 years and i've never really known how high to have the pickup. I messed around with it sometime ago and how i have it, when i play aggressive (which is most the time!) i cut my fingers up on the magnets. If i screw the pickup down further then the sound quality isnt how i want it. Is there a set height from the scratch plate it should protrude? I have a fairly low action which i'm not willing to compensate. I've seen other rays with more rounded magnets on the pickups, how comes mine a so bloody sharp!?! any help or suggestions would be cool.

That's The way the pole pieces were made back then. Regarding height, there is a very good faq on the musicman site, where you'll find all factory specs. Not measured from scratch plate though, string to pick up is what's important

I did a mini setup manual some time ago. This is the way I do it:

(6) PICKUP HEIGHT

Finally, the pickup/s should be adjusted in the play position. While depressing the E string (or B) at the last fret, measure the distance from the bottom of that string to the top of the pickup magnet for that string. Adjust for a distance of 4/32 inches. Do the same with the G string but, this time, aim for a distance of 3/32 inches. Final adjustment may have to be made to the G side by ear, so that the volume is even across all strings.

The above procedure applies to dual pickup Basses as well. After adjustments the neck pickup will be lower than the bridge pickup. Adjusting pickups by depressing the strings at the last fret ensures the respective pickup pole piece magnets don’t interfere with the strings vibrations. Strings become closer to the pickups as one plays further up the neck. At the last fret is where the strings will be closest to the pole pieces.

i have heard stories of people putting electrical tape over the polepieces to take the sharp edges out..

if you want to do it properly im sure you could craft some plastic cover that covers up the sharp bits
