I'd go with the GK. Its going to pack alot more punch in my opinion. I believe it has a wider frequency response and dB sensitivy. The tweeter is a big plus for an 8x10 in my book. And its $50 cheaper than the Ampeg.

8x10 cabs are miserable things to lug around unless you have roadies to make miserable. They sound gorgeous.....but they are miserable to haul around.Especially if you are playing a lot in different venues.

if you just want pure loudness, get a decent PA set. if you want a good 8x10 cab, play them all and find which one you want the most...

Two four tens would be much more practical. Then for smaller gigs, you could just take one. I like SWR cabs.

Then again, there's always the SWR 8x8. Best stage cab I've ever used. You can be standing right on top of it on a cramped stage and hear yourself as clear as a bell, because the eights develop their tone at close range and project a long way too. The cab is not much bigger than a 4x10, and because of the tilt back design, 3 handles and built in castors is actually easier to lug than a 4x10.

this is a little off topic, but when i went to see the band :live" in newcastle, the bass player had a stingray 4 off to the side of the stage..

now, again off topic...he was using what looked like a 8x15 cabnet and two 2x12 ones off to the side.

i was in the front moshing it up and seriously, this 8x15 thing was making my jaw rattle!

does anybody know who makes these 8x15 cabs? or must they be custom?

That thing must be the size of a house! How big was it?
Starting to think about returning to bass playing in the very near future.

I've used both, each with the same head (GK 1001RB-II). While neither of them nailed the tone in my head, I'd have to say that I was much happier overall with the Ampeg 810E. The GK 810 is one of the noisiest cabs I've ever plugged into (even with the tweeter off), regardless of whether it was in bi-amp or full range mode (bi-amped the thing hisses like you're stepping on a cat). The Ampeg seemed more solidly built, too.. the grill on the GK was flimsy and I knew if I kept it that it wouldnt last on the road for very long. Don't flame me if you're a die hard GK fan, these are my opinions based on having taken both of these beasts home and giving them a whirl on stage. I love GK heads, but their cabs don't really do it for me. Regardless of my opinion either way, I ended up going Mesa/Boogie and havent looked back

Firsy off, I endorse GK gear, so its a duh that Im going to say go with the GK.

Secondly, with GKs quality control inproving over the last two or three years I simply dont beleive that they sent out a cab with a loose or weak grill. I have played their new on old stuff on the road for 4 years now, and havent had one problem.

thanks for all the imput guys. i need it to be loud and defined, with a good amount of low end. i'm looking for something close to the ramones low end sound, and i know dee dee and cj both used ampegs. i just wanted to know if the gk could produce that type of low end and definition without distorting. i tried a harkte 8x10 last night and it could not do it at all. my guitarist is using two 4x12s, one on my side and one on his, and i believe he is going deaf. so the cab has to be able to compete with that.
