    DI box question

Which DI boxes in most of your experienced opinions sound good with the SR5?

Thinking I need to add one to my arsonal of equipment for the bigger gigs. Played a gig at a club that the soundman used the DI box on my SR5 and I did have some good sound in the room. I asked what DI it was and all he answered me with was a cheap one.

    Any opinions would be appreciated.

    great DI

I use the avalon U5, Its pricey but it makes the soundman happy and studio engineers happy. I use one with my SR5 every week.
Or the radial JDV. also one of the best.

You are going to think I'm crazy, but I had a very experienced recording engineer tell me last year that the Behringer DI box was one of the best ones out there. Who would have figured?
Starting to think about returning to bass playing in the very near future.

You can go with just a basic DI like a Countryman Type 85 ($150) that will get the job done (active DI preferred over passive). I've used the active Behringer DI-100 ($35) with good results.

The Peterson Strobostomp tuner pedal offers great tuning, a mute switch, and a built-in DI.

If you want a little EQ with that DI, you could look at a Sansamp Bass Driver DI (SABDDI), the MXR M-80 DI or the relatively new Radial Bassbone. The MXR and Radial offer two inputs (like an A/B switch) that each have their own EQ. Valuable if you are using two different basses (active and passive, or fretted and fretless) that you want to EQ differently or need to boost one more than the other. I'm currently using the MXR M-80.

Also, many amps and preamps have built-in DI's. These can vary greatly on sound quality. I prefer if my DI output has a level control so I can give the soundman the level he wants without disturbing my amp settings.

    good luck!

If money is not an issue, try the EBS preamp/DI

I would secon Todd4ta and say the Countyman DI. Great DI for live and recording.

The Avalon is also great but more expensive.

Thanks guys, that is the info I was looking for. I have the DI on my amp but thought what happened at the club ahead or on the pre side was much better than the dry sound I get when I use the DI on on the amp side.

This DI, he used was cheap and I think probably in the 40 dollar range. My sound killed in there. I amazed even myself, then smiled and said SR5's rule. I did not play any better or maybe not as good as usual that night. Got so many compliments I almost need a bigger hat. LOL

I have heard the Workingman is the standard for such things. May go that route. Just never heard how it worked with an active bass as opposed to the passive ones.

    Thanks

I use a cheap ($40) IMP brand DI box when recording my bass lines here at home. It works as well as anything. I think adding EQ on the DI kinda starts eroding the whole 'direct' concept, where the EQing is done at the board.

That's my input, and if you add $4 to it, you can get a cup of coffee at Starbucks.

But then you lose the nice tube emulation of the BDDI, or even a real tube in a preamp - style one.

See? Hence the need for the additional $4.
