'Chameleon' paints.

I've seen paint schemes on hot rods that change from green to purple when looking at various angles. There are others like it in other shades.

To my knowledge, these are very expensive automotive paints and doing a car up costs a fair bit.

Perhaps one of the yearly limited editions could be done in one of these paints?

We already do that. The John Petrucci guitars can be ordered with it. The color is called Mystic Dream

You let me down BIG Poppa...

YOu're supposed to tell Bass Players that... Yeah you can get your Bass to change colors by purchasing 6-7 EBMM basses and have your tech sling it over your shoulder at a rapid rate... and if you want a morphing guitar you should purchase 2-3 of each model and use the same process for the color changing technique!

A friend of mine just did up his 'beater' guitar with the the color shift paint. One of the local hardware stores was selling a kit couple of weeks ago, it came with stripper/paint/primer/clearcoat and all the tools for the job for fifty dollars. It looks awesome, you'd never know he didn't buy it that way. It may not be a Musicman factory finish, but it looks as good as any you'd see hanging in a store.

Check around you might be able to find a similar deal if you wanted to experiment on an old guitar.

Heh. The stuff I talked to an automotive painter about was several hundred dollars per can. He acknowledged that there were cheaper ways to do it, but the color shifts would be nowhere near as good as the real thing.

No doubt, but it can be had much cheaper. Just make sure your primer and clear coat are highest quality, the cheaper color shift paint works just fine. It may not be the stuff you'd paint your car with, or put on a new $2000 signature guitar, but it'll work fine for painting a project guitar.
