    Hello Music Man Friends,

******************************* Torture Tuesdays featured Bass today.

    *

This was and is a Ernie Ball music man Stingray bass that was Purchased New as a Full Bass.

As many Ernie Ball Stingrays as I own I just wanted something different.

In the past Ernie Ball had did a few bound necks and I got*to wanting one myself.* ""Real Bad""

    *

As for many years I've been on the hunt with no luck so decided to have this one retro fitted *myself.

With all due respect for this Ernie Ball Company I Love so much I had to make sure the work was done with the very best Luthier I could find.

    *

Trust me it did cost but what a job it was when it was all*done as you can see.

The fret board was removed and replaced, bound head stock and fret board was*bound. ""YES"", hehehe

    Had to Have it, lol

Now the body still had the Marks under the bridge where you could see for the Strings thru when EB did the Run For Japan a while back.

Japan ordered 200 strings thru I believe and this probably was meant to be one but was left over here in the USA.

    *

So we just finished drilling the body and that's where you see the strings Thru.

The End result is the Bass you see today. Plays like a dream and sounds as good as ever.

Also Thank You too All my USA & UK friends for all the very cool and sweet emails i get daily, As you know i try to reply to everyone but times i can't* always for there's just too many.

    ****************************************** Dave Jeffrey

    Thanks Big Poppa,
Ya know i see these guys all the time bringing me basses with replaced parts trying to make their bass better, and they ask the same ole questions, " CAN YOU PUT IT BACK TOO STOCK ".

It's like these guys that have these custom $6000 basses, when you hear them live they all sound like they wish their bass was a MM or a J bass, lol
    it's so funny.

I'd like too save them the money and hassel, I spent many years experimenting and testing the strings thru the body and top loaded bridges..

And apples for apples a 2 band EB over a 2 Band 1970's Stingray and this was what i have discovered

    ERNIE BALL MUSIC MAN STINGRAYS

Ernie Ball Stingrays actully had more sustain because of better frets and better crowning on the frets to give the string a much better point.

Ernie Ball Necks we're 1000% straighter and ZERO issuses
Ernie Ball Bodies are contoured which feel 100% better to play on a given 4 to 5 hour gig.
Ernie Ball Music Man Basss take 20 minutes too set up.

    LEO FENDER MUSIC MAN BASSES
70's stingrays wouldn't sustain very well even though Strings went through the body.

Fret's we're pretty much very small til 1978 which gave the bass next to nothing for sustain.

Leo Fender music man necks, felt very well but 9 out of 10 could never be perfectly straight, WHY? Bad trust rod design.

Leo Fender Slab Music Man Stingray Bodies we're always too heavey and very unconfortable.

Leo Fender Music Man Preamps had many Problems with cheap resistors which caused the famous " Motor Boating efect "

Leo Fender, Music mans took an hour or more to set up due too many reasons, Micro Tilt Idea just never worked,

raise the heel of the neck off the body and guess what. WOW no sustain at all, imagine, i now have low action but no bottom.
Hm not too good for my ears.

So the bottom Line here, Some Things get Better with Newer Technology. This is why i own 70 some Ernie Ball Music mans and 1 Leo Fender 1977 inca Silver.

Thanks For Your Time, Dave Jeffrey

    Dave, great analysis!

I was saying the same thing to my cousin a few days back re: vintage equipment.

While I can appreciate some vintage equipment, in some cases there's a very good reason why "they don't make them like they used to!"

Where Big Poppa Has his **** together is right here, He's an amazing smart guy due im sure to his own many years of playing, He uses C&C machines to cut his wood but yet Still Human hands to shape the necks, not too ruff sand them but too SHAPE the necks, So end result, you have a Very Sraight Neck but feels incredible. All I know is of my 11 basses my SR5 is the only one that I haven’t had to do anything but play it. Straight out of the box it was and still is perfect. Being left handed I’ve never got to “try before you buy” a bass, and more than once I’ve been disappointed with a new bass that comes out of the box.

This is why I eagerly await the Bongo, it’s an EBMM.

And God bless you Mr. Jeffrey, every time I catch flack for having 11 basses I bring up your massive collection and things calm down…. Thank you!
