    Lunch Pail Bassist

Definition for Lunch Pail bassist please.
Hmmm, I might have coined the phrase although I've heard it used to describe other types of work.....to me, it is someone like me.

    1. Unable and/or uninterested in ever being labeled a "Slap Monster".
    2. Probably self taught.
    3. Never going to buy a Fodera, Ritter or other possibly spalted boutique bass.
    4. Likes doing same thing over and over.
    5. Unimpressed with self.
    6. Willing to play the cheap, ugly gig.
    7. Doesn't find root-five demeaning or simplistic.

I've made this a new thread because I thought it was an interesting question.

Anyone else? Chime right in and of course, as always, you're free to make fun of me.

    Jack

    Hey! I resemble that remark!
Starting to think about returning to bass playing in the very near future.

    I'm a "check-book bassist"
Way too much gear for my level of talent

Ok, I'm competent but should be way better
    at 25+ bass years old.

All me except #3... had 2 custom made 6 string basses (and they were nice)... but then I was reformed by the advent of Bongodom (and sold said basses to help with my nasty Bongo habit).
    - Ritch

    Bongo 4H - Dargie Delight
    Sterling 4H - Trans Purple

    1) Uninterested, but I have gotten calls specifically for my slapping ability. I'm not sure whether that's a statement on the caller's hearing or my ability though.
    2) Tons of lessons over the years. Not sure they helped, but taken nonetheless.
    3) I've owned a few high enders, but my "permanent" stable is all lunchpail.
    4) Hate doing same thing over and over.
    5) Completely unimpressed with self.
    6) More than willing!
    7) I'll root-5 with the best of 'em!

I guess I'm a "left handed lunch pail bassist", but that sounds sort of like a "left handed truck driver" and I know that's BAD!

To compensate I'll start carrying my lunch in a bass case…

    1. Unable and/or uninterested in ever being labeled a "Slap Monster".

    - i can slap but only use the technique when messing around. being a punk bassit i have no practical use for slapping. its nice to be able to do it to offset the whole "you use a pick - you're lame" stuff

    2. Probably self taught.

    - correct

    3. Never going to buy a Fodera, Ritter or other possibly spalted boutique bass.

    - nope, never

    4. Likes doing same thing over and over.

    - dunno about that

    5. Unimpressed with self.

    - i kik ass! what are you talking about?

    6. Willing to play the cheap, ugly gig.

"got a garage or an amp [i'll] play any time

    7. Doesn't find root-five demeaning or simplistic.

    - see #2 ... i have no idea what that "really" means, but i can guess

I always thought of myself as a "blue collar musician"

I guess that many of the same points apply. I do show up on time and prepared for the gig. I serve the song. I can play half notes. My gear is reliable and maintained. I have some "nicotine queens" and I also have some nice newer looking basses. Over the years I have played with some really good musicians.... they have taught me a lot. I am good at what I do but I check my ego at the door. I usually play mid sized rooms in town and usually know the staff and most of the regulars by their first names. I talk to people between sets.

as the song says " I ain't no big star...but I'll play the blues for you"

I guess that would be a lunchpail bassist

Interestingly enough, I myself have been described as cheap, ugly, unimpressive and simplistic, and I have been told that playing with me is demeaning.

Seriously, though, it's like you've peaked inside my wretched little life! GET OUT OF MY HEAD!!!

As for the I-V, it's mastery holds the key to total consciousness~~~~

BTW, my Uncle died of the spalt, so be careful!
