SUB sterling bass + basslines system??

    Hey everyone,

I'm a newbie to these forums, but after reading through a load of the posts, everyone here seems to be pretty clued up on their ray's, sterling's, and bongo's.

I currently own a musicman sterling which i love the sound of for both pick and fingerstyle. However, i require a worthy backup bass, and not having enough money to afford another sterling i have settled on the idea of the new SUB sterling range. Recently i have also seen that basslines make an entire replacement system for the musicman basses, and seeing as the SUB sterling is without the coil selector it shouldn't be a problem to install. My reasons for wanting the system is that i would like to add different character to the bass, and the addition of a push/pull slap switch seems pretty cool. reviews so far have said that it is a decent and accurate sounding system.

i would be greatful with any help for the follwing:

Is it worth it? does anyone own the system? should i stick with the MM pickup and e.q?

Welcome aboard, Mark. Some guys around here have tried some replacement pickups and will likely weigh in soon enough - me, I like the stock electronics so can't give you any input, but hang tight and advice will be along soon enough.

Welcome Mark! and although I haven't swapped out any electronics or such, I'm sure swapping out the electronics in the SUB might give you what you're looking for but you might want to price out how much the new p/u&pre replacement is and the work to do it and see what used Sterlings are going for, they might be close in price

    welcome Mark!

Give the SUB Sterling a try without modification.. it may do the trick 'as-is'.
The folks on here who have 'em seem to like 'em just fine.
As Jack said, I'm sure they'll be along to post shortly.

Hey Mark. I'm in your shoes. Lots of folks here will tell you leave it as is. As much as I love my Stingray 5, you gotta do what you gotta do. I love the action on my Stingray but I will swap out my stock electronics soon for: A Nordstrang MM5.4 pickup with an Aguilar OBP-3 preamp. I know Carey Nordstrand & he's doing all the work for me. Check out his stuff @ nordstrandpickups.com. He's from Yucaipa, Ca & I live in Redlands so I got in contact with him. He builds some bad-ass custom basses & HE recommended that combo for the sound I was looking for. I was considering a Basslines PU with Bartolini EQ but his pickups are the best I have heard! He has a Sterling with his MM4.3 Pickup with stock MM electronics. It sounds AWESOME!!!! Follow you heart that follows your ear. Good luck with the swap! -Dan

Welcome Mark!! I am sure I like mine stock. I am sure you buy it, and you should do what you want to with it.

I sure can't say you are wrong. Stick around and see what happens here. It will be fun.

I will say you can beat me all day long and I like the bass I got as gotten. You can't make me say I'd change mine.

By the same token you can't make me say you shouldn't change yours if you so desire.

Wonderful community here. Enjoy it like no other
