Morse Y2D warranty question:

But this question, indirectly I guess, is for you.

I'm on the fence right now about buying a Y2D. I'm not sure if I'd rather have the hardtail or the Floyd version, but I have a question about the Floyd version.

If I buy the Floyd version and have a local luthier here (a world-class luthier, Mark Erlewine, Dan's brother) do a recess-route for the Floyd so it can float, then have him re-finish the bare wood, would it void my warranty?

I'm assuming the answer is "yes". I just figured I'd ask before taking the plunge. Because if it is going to void my warranty, I'll probably look closer at the hardtail.

However, your point of view seems a little extreme to me. You're saying it's either hard tail or floating trem. If you can't have a floating trem, isn't a dive trem better than nothing???

Actually no, it's not extreme. I don't "dive bomb". That went out in 1982 man.

I use tremolo's for more natural sounding things like chord vibrato and subtle vibrato's while doing legato.

Natural vibrato goes up, not down. Trems that only go down to me sound wholly unnatural and therefore are useless to me.

Way back in the 80's, I had a Kramer that had the Floyd resting on the body. To allow pullups, I set it up so the Floyd tilted forward a bit. After Brad Gillis and Vai popped on the scene, I did a homemade recessed route. The only disadvantage of tilting the Floyd was that it tended to pull forward easier when doing a bend. I'm sure you know this already.

If you do the route, you can line the route with black felt and it looks pretty good.

Both of my Petrucci's and every Ibanez I've ever owned has a recessed route.

I really prefer it for overall useability.

Interesting. I thought I saw Steve playing a recessed floyd on a Blueburst Morse when I saw him with DP last time. (Perfect Strangers) Well I guess if you are Steve Morse you can do that. I love the stability and double stop bendability of the LPO Trems.

I really don't think anything would go wrong, I know Mark Erlewine is an outstanding lulthier. He also wouldn't do it unless he was 100% sure he could do it perfectly.

I don't do double-stops or anything of that nature, though I know Steve does a lot, so of course the design makes perfect sense for him.

I know you guys stick 100% to the artists guitars, and I respect that completely. Just for my style and the way I use a trem, I like it to float. I just find the effects you can get with it sound more natural. That's all.

It's your guitar (at least it will ... if you buy one ...) so I'd say do what you like now that you know the warranty scoop.

If you rout it, down the road you can always block the trem if you decide you don't want it to float or want to sell it.

I think in light of the fact that there's no standard trem w/ locking tuners option (ie: Petrucci trem setup or Luke trem setup), I'll probably just go with the hardtail.

I really don't like double-locking trems much at all and having to get it recessed routed just to make it useful to me seems kinda silly.

I'm still on the fence about the purchase anyway.
