Order in - Albert Lee on the way

Well, I finally decided to fix the mistake I made back in December - selling my Silo Special to go "vintage". Well, as everyone said I would at the time I did really miss the EBMM neck. I just never bonded with that Tele, but it did help me figure out where I wanted to go from a sonic perspective .

So today I placed my order for an Albert Lee dressed out as follows:

    MM-90 pickups
    Trans red
    black pearloid pickguard
Trem (never really use it but love the feel and sound)

I figure this gives me everything I ever liked about a Strat, a Tele, and an LP Special in one package - plus the great EBMM neck and a unique feel. I almost got an Albert when I got the Silo Special instead, and I kind of always wished I had gone with the Albert instead.

Now, the waiting game begins - at least it gives me time to move out my "mistake" to fund the Albert!

Thirdpole---if it must be a ***der tele--ok--but I would check out G&L ASATs as well--especially the ASAT special--I've had several teles and The ASAT special I had blew them all into the weeds. I just dropped large on a LUKE but an Albert Lee is next. Good luck with the search.

Spud---a quick question---is the AL the EBMM that is closest to the tele ? Thats the impression I'm getting. I have not been able to lay hands on one yet---but I need another tele style guitar to replace my beloved ASAT.

DGE - It's a '52 Reissue Tele - I found one that is pretty lightweight, which is why I moved the Silo Special to get it. I haven't weighed it on a postal scale, but it certainly felt lighter weight than the others that were here in town at the time. Plus the bridge pickup on this one really rips and rings. All in all it is a great Tele as long as you like the vintage 7 1/4" radius and vintage frets. I learned on that type of neck, and I find that practicing on a vintage style neck is kind of like running with ankle weights - when you move to a modern neck like an EBMM, it's like taking those weights off. Fenders are far less consistent than EBMMs - I figured if I was going to change things up and get a Tele, I should grab on to this one. I figured if it didn't work out, I could always get another great EBMM.

However, I've just played Strat-type guitars for so long that the slab body feels alien to me. That also keeps me away from EBMMs like the Axis and the Morse Sig (although the Y2D feels better to me than the standard Morse). I would rather have this amount of $$$$ invested in my main player instead of an "exercise" guitar, and let this Tele move on to someone who will appreciate it.

Paul - Spud will come along with a definitive answer, but the AL is probably as close as you can get in the current EBMM lineup. However, don't forget that the AL has pickguard-mounted pickups; even with the base plate you won't get all of that traditional Tele tone, which I feel comes from that mix of pickup, base plate, and the steel box bridge.

I see you liked the ASAT Special - I agree those are killer tele-type guitars. Those large MFD pickups certainly don't need the box bridge to both twang and rock out. I was all set to pick up a nice used one, but someone beat me to it and I wound up with the '52RI. If you want something closer to the ASAT Special, you might try to find an Axis Sport with MM-90s. They were discontinued a few years ago, but that would give you the ash body, maple neck, and the MM-90 pickups which are somewhere in-between a P-90 and a Tele pickup.

    John,

Spud is correct with this statement, I ordered my AL back in the beginning of Feb. and it should be here any day, the wait is horrible.

I think it is the closest guitar in the EB range to the tele , but of course the quack comes as a result of the 3 pickups, and using the mid way positions in the 5 way switch.

My Tele is too dark to compare as I have Bill Lawrece and Seymour Duncan stacked Tele pickups installed it has a similar output to my Les Paul.

The Albert will deliver everything you want - but take a tip and get the Piezo. You will have two guitars in one.

I took it to my mates workshop last week and in there was a 60's tube amp
    - the name escapes me - it could have been a Watkins Dominator. Anyway all the controls were flat out and we brought in the Piezo = instant Billy Gibbons!!!
I use it for an Acoustic sound but we were looking at each other with "jaws dropped" at the sound.

The ASAT special is the one with P90's right ? I tried one and i thought it was better than any Fender Tele's i've tried ! I was this close to buying it ! The only thing holding me back is the goofy headstock (No offense to you G&L owners !)

I'll just give it some time to see if the GAS holds on or fades away ! I know i am getting a used Axis Sport soon anyway !

    Thanks

Many of us have had to go thru the wait, but once it arrives you would go thru it all again. Similar to childbirth I suppose. A painful delivery but you'd do it again
