What I really need here is a pic of a grandmotherly type in a 1950's below the knee outfit! But I have to get my son to his LAX tourney.

Having dealt with my wife over many years, I've learned that there are a number of steps and strategies you need to adopt (tongue in cheek).

    1. The "tendinitis" strategy: claim that your current guitar gives you severe pain on playing, due to its profile/width/action etc. etc. and that your new choice will be so much better because...works very well

    2. The "trickle down" strategy: over the course of a few days, leave pictures of your new target around the house (magazines conveniently left open etc) or leave the web browser with a good picture of the new target. Then just ask if she likes the colour. Say no more. Then wait a few more days and gradually introduce the coming purchase with "did you like that guitar?"

    3. The "financial" strategy: "this guitar will be a great investment because..." or "the prices are going up by 15% next month..."or "these guitars are so difficult to find in this condition and at this price..." or "I can get a really good p/ex deal or interest free credit etc." ...often works well with one of the other strategies.

For the heavy financial approach, I usually argue that I earn three times what my wife earns and thus I am entitled to spend more - this is a confrontational approach and should only be used in an emergency.

You may need to have a potential sacrificial lamb amongst your collection - either a guitar that you could do without or a whole bunch of FX that you can sell - this usually sweetens the deal and should be mentioned before introducing the target instrument.

The unannounced purchase is, however, very risky - I did this once and it was not pretty. However, by adopting a combination of approaches, you can usually work things to your advantage...

I said this in another thread but it fits this one also. Just tell the salesguy to give you a dummy invoice with a higher retail price. She'll think you got a steal and couldn't pass it up. One time I even took a price tag from a different guitar altogether!!!

If the retail is $1,300 and you paid, say, $850 simply get a invoice with a retail price of $1,600...even ask the guy to put a buy price of $950 on it. You can say you talked them down an extra hundred bucks...

We're building a small business right now, so I can only afford to have major G.A.S. about once every year or two.

That said . . . My wife has an expensive aquarium reef tank hobby. Every time she drops $100 on a metal halide bulb, I count that as a deposit in my future gear justification bank.

Seriously, though, my wife is my best friend and I am sooo spoiled it's not even funny. When I'm ready for my next big guitar purchase, she'll be as excited as me.

After reading all this, I need to be more wise about leaving messages on voice mail for end users who phone with inquiries, especially when it's a female voice who is on the other end with the blurb-it could be the guy's wife.

Beeep "Yes it's Sherry SK8, there is oneof those high end, ultra deluxe, Ferrari of Guitar gear, expensive amps you're interested available at a store half way across Canada . . . " hohoho.

I'm starting to feel like I should talk in code or something but then I'd feel like I'm being secretive like I'm "the other women"

    "Hi It's Sherry-y'know that um . . . thing you were asking about . . . well um . . . it could be available if you wanted to contact me again and I could tell you um . . . y'know . . . where you might be able to get it . . if you're really sure . . y'know . . "

I definitely think the second one sounds shadier, usually these Knuckleheads' wives know of their "affliction"...maybe just not exactly how much the Knucklehead in question had spent.

After reading all these posts, l am a much wiser man now, so once l do get married, she will be that trained, that all she will be saying "when are you gonna buy a new EBMM?" all the while she will be wearing a cheerleader outfit, that's while the French maid and teachers outfit are getting cleaned.

Thanks for all the advice guys and girls,

    Scott.
