Was hoping in this online day and age I wouldn't have to sit through hours of bad radio to hear the track (and believe me, if you think radio is bad elsewhere, it's REALLY "el stinko" in NYC).

Only heard the track once so far; in general, unfortunately, I wasn't bowled over on first listen, but the heavy detuning factor on the opening was certainly quite interesting! Maybe it'll grow on me...

FYI, record companies are pretty notorious for putting out weak tracks first to extend the run of a high interest band's record, and this was certainly the case in my experience with VH when I dealt with Warner Brothers back in the day (anyone know what VH's post WB label situation is?). So, for those of us who aren't bowled over, there's still hope they have something more interesting down the pike still to come...cross your fingers!

I think it sounds great. It definately gets better, in my opinion, as the song goes on. It does seem to be a rather rough mix, but I defnately like the chorus, and the guitar on it. It is pretty fun! Which is precisely what I look for in a Van Halen song.

Yeah, this one's a grower...I've probably listened to the song about 70 times (wait, just started it again...71) since the first download. Life is good, IMO.

I dunno if this is a final mix or not; I was advised per sources on the Internet that this was supposed to hit the radio today, but that it was scheduled "for adds June 1", whatever that means. I'm not all big on that industry lingo, so whatever...

Source? Direct from Internet to me, then to my fellow EBMM'ers. Truthfully, don't know...just sent it on its way once I secured a copy of it for myself. I got this copy of the mp3 a la file sharing at about 1:30 AM Arizona time, and this song was not slated to start playing on the radio until 6AM EST, which would be an hour and a half later than when I acquired it. So I think I beat them to the punch.

(For the record -- pardon the pun -- I will still purchase the Best Of when it is released; getting this song early via the Internet only allows me to have it in advance, and does not remove me from buying the CD to get this song. I fully support VH and real music for that matter, and will do so via purchasing the 2 disc set, even though I have the entire VH catalog on CD...I'm looking forward to the remasters anyways!)

I think that grunge riff is a joke, and I say that on the grounds of pulling in listeners: "hey this is pretty tight, is this MonkeyF*ck (or whatever 100 bands the listener thinks it might be), and then BANG, balls to the wall VH"...kind of like a "gotcha!" Other than that, it's Eb tuning (a la old school EVH), with a little fun with the D-tuna. I'm bringing home the 5150 tonight from my drummer's house to get my learn on.

As I said over on the Peavey forum, it may not change the world, a la Eruption, but it sends a loud message to it that real rock has just kicked in the door, and is coming in to eat all of your potato chips and drink all of your beer.

I'll provide a lingo translation, as I used to be in the biz, and still sort of am in a way....those of you who aren't jaded by the music industry yet may wanna go read another thread - consider this your "fair warning"!

"Going for adds" is a record industry term for a preferred track being offically "offered" by a company to radio stations to add to their official weekly playlists (stations that play any kind of current music will add and drop several songs from their playlists at a time like this usually every Tuesday).

In theory, a station could get a CD and play any track whenever they wanted to, but it doesn't work that way - they usually work in coordination with the record companies' efforts to "work a track", and the record companies often have a roadmap of what tracks they'll be highlighting on radio and MTV/VH1 plotted long before an album even comes out.

Stations usually start a song out with a few plays a day to see how the response is, and increase the number of times it plays on the air during the next few weeks depending on a number of factors (some of which have absolutely nothing to do at all with the quality and/or musicality of the track - oh the stories I could tell).

Mega-artists like VH often get bigger numbers of airplays right out of the box, while newer "baby bands" start out with a minimum number of "spins" and have to prove their merit.

Ever wonder where radio stations get the "free CDs" they hand out? It's one of the promotional perks the companies send stations when they add a track. Ditto on those free trips they give away to see an artist halfway around the world. It technically ain't payola, but it's awful close...and they often increase the incentives in direct opposition to the crappiness of the track if there's a reluctance for a station to add it.

Sorry to burst your bubbles, folks, but that's the radio/record company industry in a nutshell. It's far less about art, and far more about playing "the game"....<ugh>

I keep hearing about "payola" being back in the game nowdays. I don't really think radio execs care about free CDs, they want cash.

It is like they never went on hiatus it picks up where they left off but still contemporary.

The lyrics obviously has alot of meaning to the band.

In Canada there is also government legislated playing of music.
Yes the government says the radio station has to play certain bands.
Its called Can Con for canadian content.
radio stations MUST play a certain amount of canadian content. I get sick of hearing stuff like BTO on certain radio stations.
In a way it is good. You probably would not have heard of bands like Rush, Brian Adams, Shania Twain, Bare Nak'd Ladies, and Quebec's leading lady, Celine Dion. They all got their footing here on Canadian airwaves (Shania, well she had her husband to help)
BTW I really hate Shania Twain's music. Sounds too much like Def Lepard and gets over played here.
Does she get alot of airtime in the states ? ( I suspect she does in south/western parts) I feel sry for you if she does.
