Best Van Halen album...

Fair Warning, hands down.

Every track explodes and/or smokes. THE definition of god-like rock guitar tone and attitude. Despite it being more of a studio effort than their "get it in a take or two" previous releases, it still bristles and crackles with spontaneous fire.

Required listening for any guitarist who aspires to virtuousity, or anyone who just wants to hear a butt-kickin', flame throwin', stomp-ass rock album.

Plus, a unique sonic snapshot of a creative young band's creative tensions and growing pains that has yet to be rivaled. I believe a recent magazine article quoted Ed saying he would go back and re-record the guitar parts the way he wanted them in the middle of the nite after fighting with everyone about them all day (and amazingly, nobody noticed)!

I agree with you Purple....Fair Warning does it for me too. Especially Mean Street....every time I hear that tune I'm reminded what a truly great player he is. His rhythm playing has always been what I've noticed more. His solo work is heads and shoulders above most which goes without saying, but his grooves are what catches my ear most.

Cool forum you guys have here. Everyone seems very cool and mature as opposed to many others.

I'm the proud owner of two Axis guitars. Love em. Easily my #1 and #2 axes. Thinking about picking up a Petrucci too.

With regards to this string, I can easily say "Fair Warning" is my fave too!

I just listened to For Unlawful on the way home from work...methinks pound for pound that ones the most consistant, as well the guitar tones are fuggin' transparent. I love some of those 3 dimensional sounds.

Anyway, I really can't pick a "best" VH album, they each have their own flavor, but I will say that I think 1984 offers the most over any of the other albums. I can put that CD in, and I am never even tempted to push the skip button on my CD player. Every track fits in it's place perfectly. Even the tracks that were never commercially successful still rock. It was like they said, "Okay, Jump is for the radio, and House of Pain is for the fans, Panama is for the radio, and Girl Gone Bad is for the fans."

That being said, I don't think you can hand out top honors to just one album for VH. Each lead singer makes the band different IMO.
I think you have to give each incarnation of VH a best album.
So if 1984 is my pick for DLR/VH, then my pick for SH/VH is F.U.C.K.
This album just flat out rocked from the word go. It was like a return to the roots of the original VH with the music. It was such a welcome album after OU812, which I think was one of their weakest albums.

And Van Halen's best album with Gary Cherone is .................waiting...................chirp, cricket..................

Ya never know...Ed produced a band called "Private Life" back in the late 80s that was rumored to be fronted by one of his housekeepers, if memory serves me correctly....(seriously, I'm not kidding)....

I'm confused. I thought there were only two singers...DLR and Sammy Hagar......did VH record with cherone or was he a temp replacement for tour purposes?
