Hey Koog, Gary was selected as the singer for Van Halen after the whole David Lee Roth at the Music Awards fiasco. Everybody thought that Dave was back in, then the next thing you know, Van Halen 3 comes out with Gary Cherone singing.

Even if the album would have rocked hard, the fans would have never accepted Gary Cherone after the DLR teaser. As it stood, the album was panned by the critics and fans, and Cherone was either fired or quit.(that is never very clear in this particular band)

I personally think that it didn't work out because Cherones influences are so diverse. He is more of a Queen influenced guy.
Gary's influence was important because it seems like Eddie can write some great stuff, but it is up to the lead singer to organize and arrange it into a song that makes sense. It just wasn't a match. Too bad, because Gary Cherone has an incredible voice, although I think he tried a little too hard to sound like Sammy on VH3. I remember thinking that I had never heard Gary sing that way with Extreme.

I always kind of thought that Chris Cornell would have been a good replacement.

phew thanks. I have no other forum to go to. They won't take me.
(Wasn't that funny in Wayne's World 2 when Chris Farley was training to be a roadie ?)

I didn't really think that Gary really fitted in. I didn't like the album and I saw on TV the concert with him and VH. Just didn't look to fit in IMAO. Singing style wise I feel he was a bit weak compared to the rest of the band.
But who could fit into VH genre without changing the VH tone ?
I read an interview with a female vocalist who lives near 5150. (forget her name but quite famous) she said it went well but the band would have to change the name if they got a new vocalist.
It would have just sounded to different to what VH fans are used to hearing.
Which I feel was part of the problem with Gary.
Gary is a great vocalist but not a VH vocalist.
The awards ceremony was sickening with Roth. He should have just stood there with the rest of the band and look "cool". I really believe he blew it at that point. I don't think Roth has matured with the rest of VH. He is still stuck in 1980 just older with the same hair style. Albeit receding.
Roth was good for his time. VH had to break the mold and cast a new one when they let Roth go. I think Hagar fit the VH mold when the band began to mature in the late 80's. They didn't break the mold when Hagar left in the 90's but thought that Gary would fit into it which he didn't.
    Now we see Hagar back.
Goes to show that it aint good to burn bridges eh ?

    HHHHHHMMMMMMMMMMMmmmmmmmmm

Here we go. My fav VH cd is a van halen tribute CD. Eddy does not even play on it. Dwiezl (spelling) zappa, blues scarasceno, george lynch ect... make it a killer CD and it is produced properly!!!!!!!!

ON the true VH front I like 1984 and bit abd bobs from all the other albums. All the bits and bobs did not make it to the best of CD through.

You'll probably think I'm weird... well.. you probably do already...

but my fav EVH is the solo on "One Foot Out the Door" on Fair Warning.

It's just so different. I don't know that I could ever come up with something so atonal. My brain just doesn't go there.

My favorite is usually the one I'm listening to at the moment.

Balance may be his best over all guitar tone. The guitar solo in "Feeling" is spot on. Fair Warning was just in your face. Diver Down was in your face with a commercial twist. I graduated H.S. in 1984 so that album has obvious meaning. I can go though all of them and give you reasons why they would be the "best" VH album.

I consider "III" to be more of an experiment than a VH album.

Fair Warning and Diver Down equally for me.

I loved Michael's tone on DD! Old school beef and tone.

Guys, haven't we been asked a few times to tone down the EVH talk?
